Authorities raided a popular nightclub in Thailand’s Ayutthaya province early Sunday after receiving complaints that the venue was operating beyond permitted hours, with 20 customers later testing positive for drugs.
The operation took place in Uthai district after officials received information about alleged illegal activity at the nightclub. The raid was carried out in the early hours, when authorities found customers still inside the premises despite the reported breach of operating hours.
Authorities conducted drug tests on customers at the venue, with 20 people returning positive results. The findings added to concerns that the establishment may have been used as a gathering place for illegal drug activity.
The raid also highlights Thailand’s continuing efforts to crack down on nightlife venues that operate outside licensing and safety regulations. Authorities have increasingly targeted entertainment businesses accused of staying open beyond legal hours or allowing drug-related activity on their premises.
Similar operations elsewhere in Thailand have uncovered both customers testing positive for drugs and narcotics allegedly being kept or sold inside entertainment venues. The country’s Office of the Narcotics Control Board has also stepped up coordinated operations against businesses suspected of operating illegally or becoming centres for drug use.
Following the Ayutthaya raid, authorities are considering further action against the nightclub. The venue could face a lengthy closure as officials examine possible violations involving its operating hours, licensing and alleged drug activity.
The incident comes as Thai authorities continue tightening oversight of nightlife businesses, particularly those that remain open after permitted hours. Officials have repeatedly warned that establishments can face severe penalties when illegal activity is found on their premises.
For customers, the raid is also a reminder that drug testing can form part of enforcement operations at entertainment venues. Those who test positive may face legal proceedings depending on the circumstances and applicable Thai law.
The Ayutthaya operation is likely to add pressure on nightlife operators to comply with licensing requirements and closing times. Authorities have made clear through recent raids across the country that entertainment venues are increasingly being subjected to closer scrutiny when complaints of illegal activity are received.
