Thailand’s opposition People’s Party (PP) is calling on the ruling Pheu Thai Party to take action over alleged corruption and address concerns surrounding the conduct of senior political figures.
PP deputy leader Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn has accused Pheu Thai senior figure Phumtham Wechayachai of using past allegations and political issues selectively, urging the party to demonstrate that it is serious about tackling corruption rather than allowing the matter to become a political dispute.
Wiroj’s comments add to growing pressure on Pheu Thai as the government faces scrutiny over its handling of corruption-related allegations. The People’s Party has sought to position itself as a stronger opposition voice on transparency and accountability, particularly on issues involving the use of state power.
The dispute also reflects wider tensions between the two parties. Although Pheu Thai and the People’s Party have previously worked around common political objectives, they remain major competitors in parliament, with the opposition closely watching decisions made by the government and its senior figures.
For the People’s Party, the issue is not simply about individual accusations. It is also an opportunity to challenge Pheu Thai over whether it is prepared to investigate allegations involving people within or connected to the political establishment, regardless of their political affiliation.
Pheu Thai faces the challenge of responding without allowing the controversy to deepen existing political divisions. Any decision to investigate allegations could carry political consequences, while failing to address them could provide the opposition with further ammunition to question the government’s commitment to good governance.
The latest exchange comes as Thailand’s political parties prepare for another period of intense parliamentary competition. With corruption and government accountability likely to remain prominent issues, both the ruling coalition and opposition parties are under pressure to demonstrate that their actions match their public commitments.
The People’s Party is expected to continue pressing Pheu Thai for clearer action, while the government will have to balance political stability with demands for greater transparency.
