MANILA, Philippines — Manny Pacquiao is set to add another distinction to an already extraordinary career, with the Philippine Normal University (PNU) conferring on the Filipino boxing icon an honorary Doctor in Physical Education and Sports, Honoris Causa.
The recognition is not being given simply because Pacquiao became one of boxing’s biggest global stars. PNU says the degree honors his broader contribution to Philippine sports and the values embodied by his journey—from poverty in General Santos City to becoming the only boxer in history to win world championships across eight different weight divisions.
The university, which serves as the Philippines’ National Center for Teacher Education, said Pacquiao’s story represents qualities closely associated with physical education and sports, including discipline, perseverance, courage, goal-setting and excellence.
From poverty to global boxing icon
Pacquiao’s rise has long been regarded as one of the most remarkable success stories in Philippine sports.
Born in General Santos City in 1978, he emerged from difficult circumstances and built a professional boxing career that eventually took him to the biggest stages in the sport.
His accomplishments transformed him from a Filipino boxing champion into an international sports personality and a symbol of national pride.
For PNU, however, his importance goes beyond championship belts.
The university emphasized that Pacquiao demonstrated how sports can become a vehicle for personal transformation, social mobility and national inspiration.
His career has also encouraged generations of Filipino athletes to believe that international success can emerge from even the most modest beginnings.
More than what happened inside the ring
PNU also highlighted Pacquiao’s activities outside boxing, including his involvement in public service and initiatives connected with education, health, livelihood and community development.
That broader record is part of the university’s rationale for recognizing him.
Rather than treating athletic success simply as a collection of trophies and records, PNU framed Pacquiao’s journey as an example of how sports can develop character and create opportunities beyond competition.
The university said his legacy includes inspiring young Filipinos to pursue athletic excellence while showing how discipline and perseverance can be applied to other areas of life.
CHED approval clears the way
The honorary doctorate has also gone through the required academic and regulatory process.
According to PNU, the conferment was endorsed by the PNU Academic Council and Board of Regents before receiving approval from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) through CEB Resolution No. 625-2026.
That distinction is significant because an honorary doctorate is not the same as earning a conventional doctoral degree through a graduate program.
Under Philippine higher-education guidelines, an honorary degree—honoris causa, meaning “for the sake of the honor”—recognizes an individual’s notable accomplishments or contributions to a particular field, society or the nation.
Pacquiao has previously received an honorary doctorate. In 2009, Southwestern University in Cebu conferred an honorary doctorate in humanities on him, recognizing his contribution to bringing honor to the Philippines through sports.
When will Manny Pacquiao receive the degree?
PNU said the formal conferment ceremony will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 4 p.m. at the PNU Manila Quadrangle.
The event is expected to add another milestone to Pacquiao’s unusual journey—from a young boxer fighting his way out of poverty to a world champion, public servant, philanthropist and now recipient of an honorary doctorate specifically connected to physical education and sports.
For Pacquiao, the honor represents another chapter after decades of accomplishments in the ring.
For PNU, it represents something larger: a recognition of the transformative power of sport and the ability of one athlete’s story to inspire an entire generation.
And as the Philippines prepares to see Pacquiao formally receive the academic honor, one thing is certain—the “People’s Champ” is about to add another title to his name:
