MANILA, Philippines — AJ Raval is opening another chapter in her acting career as she takes on a short-film project that is being positioned for an international release, adding a new dimension to her much-talked-about return to show business.
The project comes at a significant point in Raval’s career. After stepping away from her previous run of projects to prioritize her family, the actress has been gradually making her way back into acting—and her latest work suggests that her comeback may be heading in a different direction.
Raval made headlines earlier this year when she returned to television through GMA Network’s Magpakailanman. She portrayed Sienna, a young mother, in the episode “Batang Nanay, Tatlong Panganay,” marking her first appearance in the drama anthology and her first major dramatic role. GMA Entertainment reported that Raval described the experience as an opportunity to show a different side of her acting abilities.
The comeback was notable because Raval had previously become widely associated with mature and sexy film projects. In May, she revealed on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda that she had turned down new offers for sexy roles because she no longer wanted to take on that type of project.
Instead, Raval said she wanted to explore other genres, particularly drama.
GMA News and Philstar.com both reported that the actress acknowledged receiving several offers after her previous television appearance but chose not to accept projects she considered too sexy. She also said she had regrets about some of her past mature projects, while emphasizing that she learned from those experiences.
That career shift makes her latest short-film project particularly intriguing.
A different direction for AJ Raval
Raval’s return to acting has not been an overnight comeback. In May, Philstar.com reported that her Magpakailanman appearance was her first acting project after leaving Vivamax and stepping back from show business to concentrate on her family.
By August, Raval was again discussing her career plans publicly. During a jewelry fashion show appearance with partner Aljur Abrenica, she said she was considering a gradual return to acting while continuing to prioritize her family and education. Abrenica also confirmed that both of them had been receiving movie opportunities and encouraged audiences to watch for their upcoming projects.
The new short-film project therefore arrives at an interesting moment: Raval is no longer simply returning to the industry—she appears to be reshaping the kind of work she wants to pursue.
From local projects to an international audience
An international release could give Raval an opportunity to reach audiences beyond the Philippines and potentially introduce her acting to a broader market.
That would represent a notable development for an actress whose career has largely been associated with Philippine commercial and streaming productions. Her previous film credits include projects such as Nerisa and Death of a Girlfriend, while her recent Magpakailanman appearance demonstrated her willingness to move into more dramatic material.
The international direction also comes as Philippine actors and filmmakers continue to seek audiences outside the domestic market through festivals, streaming platforms and international film releases.
For Raval, the timing could prove significant.
Rather than simply returning to the type of roles that first made her widely recognized, she appears to be exploring opportunities that could broaden her image as an actress.
