Grammy-winning singer Sam Smith is officially engaged to British fashion designer Christian Cowan, turning months of engagement speculation into confirmed news.
Smith confirmed the engagement during an interview with The New York Times published in July 2026, identifying Cowan as their fiancé after the couple had been romantically linked for more than three years.
The confirmation came several months after reports first surfaced following the couple’s appearance at the 2026 Met Gala in New York.
From engagement rumors to an official confirmation
Speculation about a possible engagement began in May when Page Six reported that Smith and Cowan had allegedly been overheard discussing their engagement at the Mark Hotel before attending the Met Gala.
A source described the engagement as private and said the couple was extremely happy. Another source reportedly confirmed the information to Page Six. Smith was also seen wearing a yellow-diamond ring, which fueled further speculation that the couple had taken their relationship to the next level.
At the time, however, the engagement had not been publicly confirmed by Smith.
That changed in July.
In an interview with The New York Times, Smith openly referred to Cowan as their fiancé, confirming that the couple is set to marry. GMA News and Philstar subsequently reported the confirmation.
Their relationship began before the Met Gala romance went public
Smith and Cowan were first linked in December 2022, after being spotted together in New York.
Their relationship became increasingly public, and they eventually made their red-carpet debut as a couple at the 2024 Met Gala, where Cowan designed Smith’s outfit.
Vogue reported at the time that Cowan created coordinated looks for the pair, with Smith wearing a black ensemble featuring a sheer chiffon skirt overlay. Smith also described feeling beautiful in Cowan’s designs.
The couple returned to the Met Gala together in 2025 and again in 2026, making the event a recurring milestone in their relationship.
Their 2026 Met Gala appearance had another layer
For the 2026 Met Gala, Cowan designed an elaborate black ensemble for Smith inspired by the work of French artist and designer Erté.
The dramatic outfit reportedly contained 255,000 individual crystals and beads and required approximately 2,000 hours of hand sewing.
Cowan described the creation as a love letter to Smith, adding an especially personal touch to what was already one of the evening’s most eye-catching looks.
The Los Angeles Times also reported that Smith’s outfit weighed about 52 pounds, making the glamorous appearance an unusually demanding fashion statement.
Their engagement is also shaping Smith’s music
Perhaps the sweetest detail surrounding the engagement is that Cowan has become a major source of inspiration for Smith’s next musical chapter.
Smith’s upcoming album, “Hazel Eyes,” takes its name from the color of Cowan’s eyes.
Smith also revealed that “Everlasting Love,” the album’s opening track, was started the night before their first date with Cowan and was completed as their relationship developed.
The singer described the project as the first time they had written extensively about requited love, rather than the heartbreak that characterized many of their earlier hits.
“For me, there’s something radical about being queer in this time, in this world, and singing love songs,” Smith told The New York Times, according to reports.
And the biggest wedding detail? They are keeping it private
Despite confirming the engagement, Smith has made it clear that some details will remain between the couple.
In a later interview with The New Yorker, Smith was asked directly who proposed to whom.
Their answer?
There are some secrets they intend to keep.
That means fans may have to wait a little longer for details about the proposal, the wedding plans and whether the couple intends to share a public ceremony.
For now, however, one thing is no longer speculation: Sam Smith and Christian Cowan are engaged.
And with Smith turning their relationship into the inspiration behind an entire album, their next chapter may be just as personal—and just as dramatic—as their music.
