MANILA, Philippines — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Cubao is mourning the sudden loss of two priests who died on the same day, September 11, in a heartbreaking double tragedy that has left the Catholic community grieving.
The Diocese of Cubao announced the death of Fr. Michael James Ty, 54, at around 3 p.m. on September 11. Just minutes later, the diocese released another announcement confirming the death of Fr. Edward Anthony Cometa, 35.
The deaths of the two priests on the same day prompted an outpouring of prayers and condolences from members of the Catholic community.
According to reports by The Philippine STAR, both priests died at the same hospital, although the Diocese of Cubao has not publicly disclosed the causes of their deaths.
Other reports, including coverage by Interaksyon and Bombo Radyo, likewise confirmed the sequence of announcements and said the diocese did not release further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
‘God Calls Two by Two’
Cubao Bishop Elias Ayuban Jr. expressed the diocese’s grief in a social media post following the deaths of the two priests.
The bishop described September 11 as a day of mourning for the Diocese of Cubao and reflected on the loss of the two priests who had served as brothers in ministry.
The diocese called on priests, parishioners and other members of the faithful to offer prayers for Fr. Ty and Fr. Cometa, as well as for their families and loved ones.
Interaksyon reported that the Diocese of Cubao described the two as brothers in ministry and appealed to the Catholic faithful to remember them in their prayers during this difficult time.
Two Losses That Shook the Diocese
The deaths of Fr. Ty and Fr. Cometa, aged 54 and 35 respectively, were announced separately within minutes of each other — an extraordinary and painful development for the Cubao Diocese.
