PITRUFQUÉN, CHILE — A devastating overnight fire at a nursing home in southern Chile has killed 16 people, most of them elderly residents, while 10 others were rescued and taken to a hospital, authorities said.
The blaze erupted at the El Edén senior living facility in the Villa Comuy area of Pitrufquén, in Chile’s Araucanía region, at around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, September 11, according to local authorities and Chilean media reports.
Firefighters from several nearby communities rushed to the scene as flames rapidly consumed the single-story facility. The fire was brought under control during the early hours of Saturday, but rescuers later found the victims inside the building.
ONLY 10 WERE ABLE TO ESCAPE
Authorities said approximately 26 people were inside the facility when the fire broke out. Only 10 were successfully evacuated and brought to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
Reports indicate that some residents had limited mobility, potentially making evacuation especially difficult as the fire spread through the building.
One particularly troubling detail emerging from the investigation is that a single caregiver was reportedly responsible for the residents during the night. Chilean outlet Meganoticias reported that the facility had 26 adults under care, including residents with varying degrees of mobility and some who were bedridden.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation.
FACILITY HAD PREVIOUS REGULATORY PROBLEMS
The tragedy has also raised questions about the nursing home’s operating conditions.
According to reports from Chilean media, authorities had previously raised concerns about the facility. The regional health authorities reportedly identified regulatory deficiencies, while Pitrufquén Mayor Jacqueline Romero said the municipality had sent a letter in February requesting an inspection because the facility did not comply with required regulations.
Other reports said the home had faced sanitary proceedings and fines dating back to 2019, with authorities describing it as a repeat offender.
Those revelations have intensified questions over whether earlier warnings were adequately addressed.
Authorities have not concluded that those regulatory issues caused the deaths, however. Investigators are still working to establish exactly how the fire started, how quickly it spread and whether any failures in prevention or oversight contributed to the scale of the tragedy.
PRESIDENT ORDERS REVIEW OF ELDERLY CARE HOMES
Chile’s President José Antonio Kast said the tragedy requires an urgent response and ordered a review of conditions at elderly care facilities across the country.
Kast said authorities would work with investigators to determine what happened, including whether there were failures in inspection or prevention and whether previous warnings were properly acted upon.
The president’s intervention comes as investigators examine not only the cause of the fire but also the circumstances under which the facility was operating.
Meanwhile, the municipality of Pitrufquén declared three days of communal mourning following the deaths.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
Police and prosecutors have secured the scene while forensic teams work to identify the victims and determine the origin and cause of the blaze.
Investigators are also examining whether the facility was operating legally and whether previous regulatory concerns were properly addressed.
The fire has sparked a broader debate in Chile over the safety and oversight of facilities caring for vulnerable older adults—particularly residents who may be unable to evacuate without assistance.
For families of the victims, however, the immediate priority is mourning and identifying their loved ones.
As authorities continue searching for answers, one question is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore: Were there warning signs that could have prevented the tragedy?
