CEBU CITY, Philippines — An elderly pedestrian was killed following a motorcycle crash in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City, highlighting once again the serious risks faced by pedestrians and other vulnerable road users along the city’s busy streets.
The fatal incident was reported in Mabolo, where a motorcycle was involved in a collision that resulted in the death of the elderly pedestrian. Details surrounding the circumstances of the crash, including the identities of those involved and the circumstances immediately before the collision, should be confirmed through the Cebu City Police Office and traffic authorities before being reported as established fact.
The incident comes amid continuing concerns over road safety in Cebu City, where motorcycles, private vehicles and pedestrians frequently share heavily traveled urban roads.
Recent Cebu road crashes have underscored the dangers faced by pedestrians. In June, SunStar Cebu reported that a 30-year-old pedestrian was killed after being struck by a motorcycle along F. Cabahug Street in Barangay Kasambagan. Police said the incident was among two separate road crashes in Cebu City that claimed three lives that day.
Another fatal motorcycle-related crash was reported in Barangay Mabolo in August. According to Banat, a 28-year-old motorcycle passenger died after the motorcycle she was riding was sideswiped by an Isuzu Traviz along S. Osmeña Jr. Boulevard. Police reviewed CCTV and dashcam footage as part of their investigation, while the vehicle driver was expected to face a case for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
The separate incidents illustrate how quickly road conflicts involving motorcycles and larger vehicles can turn deadly, particularly on busy Cebu City thoroughfares.
Cebu City steps up pedestrian-safety efforts
The latest fatality also comes as the Cebu City government continues efforts to improve pedestrian safety.
In July, The Freeman reported that the city had cleared nearly 30 kilometers of sidewalks across 17 major streets, including portions of Mabolo. The operation was intended to remove obstructions and make pedestrian routes safer and more accessible, particularly for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Authorities have also previously emphasized the importance of pedestrian discipline and the use of designated crossing areas. Cebu City traffic authorities have conducted enforcement operations against jaywalking, while reminding motorists that they must slow down or stop when pedestrians are crossing designated pedestrian lanes.
For now, the Mabolo fatality serves as another reminder that road safety depends on both motorists and pedestrians exercising caution, especially in densely populated urban areas.
Authorities are expected to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the collision as the investigation continues.
