VALENCIA CITY, BUKIDNON — Authorities have taken a 15-year-old student into custody following alleged online threats warning of a possible shooting attack against students and school personnel in Valencia City, Bukidnon.
The case has raised alarm among the local community as authorities move to prevent the threats from turning into actual violence.
According to reports from Bombo Radyo Malaybalay and the Philippine Daily Inquirer, police launched an investigation after threatening material circulated online. The alleged threats reportedly involved attacks against public and private secondary schools in the city.
Valencia City police, led by Police Lt. Col. Brian Panganiban, acted following instructions from city officials and conducted an operation that resulted in the minor being taken into custody. The city’s social welfare office also became involved to ensure that the case is handled with appropriate intervention while protecting the rights of the child.
Authorities are also looking into other material circulating online, including a video showing a student altercation near a school. Police and local officials said monitoring and security measures are being strengthened as they work to prevent further incidents involving students and school communities.
Why the case is drawing wider attention
The Valencia City incident comes at a particularly sensitive time for Philippine schools.
On August 18, a deadly shooting occurred at an Ateneo-affiliated school in Zamboanga City, where a student was killed and the alleged shooter also died. The incident triggered renewed national discussions about school security, firearm access and the influence of violent material circulating online.
Reuters reported that the Zamboanga shooting prompted calls for stronger firearm-safety measures and renewed scrutiny of how young people encounter violent content online.
That national backdrop has made every reported threat against a school particularly serious. Authorities generally treat threats of violence as matters requiring immediate investigation, even when it remains unclear whether an alleged threat will actually be carried out.
Authorities urge vigilance, but avoid spreading unverified posts
With the investigation continuing, authorities and school communities face another challenge: preventing panic while ensuring that credible threats are not ignored.
Parents, students and school personnel are urged to rely on verified information from police, local government units and school authorities rather than forwarding unverified screenshots, videos or claims circulating on social media.
The identity of the minor should also be protected because the suspect is a child. Authorities have not publicly identified the teenager in the reports reviewed for this story.
For now, the central question remains whether the online threats were merely intended to cause fear—or whether investigators will uncover a more serious plan behind them.
One thing is already clear: after a string of high-profile school-violence incidents in the country, even an online threat can trigger a major security response.
