A routine classroom safety check in Cebu took a disturbing turn after a teacher discovered a .357 Magnum revolver inside the school bag of a 14-year-old Grade 9 student at Lut-od National High School in Barangay Lut-od, Pinamungajan.
The firearm was found on Thursday, August 20, during a surprise inspection of students’ bags, according to reports from ABS-CBN News and The Freeman.
The teacher immediately sought assistance from school authorities, who contacted the police. Responding officers secured the firearm and began investigating how the weapon ended up in the possession of a minor inside the campus.
Firearm reportedly came from grandfather’s home
Initial police information reported by The Freeman said the revolver allegedly belonged to the student’s grandfather.
Investigators said the firearm had reportedly been kept inside a cabinet at the family’s residence in Purok Santol, Barangay Lut-od. The student allegedly took the gun from the cabinet and brought it to school.
The student’s parents were reportedly working outside the municipality, while the minor was under the care of his grandparents. Authorities are expected to determine how the firearm was stored and whether there were violations involving its possession or safekeeping.
The discovery came at a particularly sensitive time for schools in Cebu and elsewhere in the Philippines.
Discovery comes amid heightened school-security concerns
The incident follows a series of serious school-security concerns across the country, including deadly shootings in Tacloban and Zamboanga.
In June, a shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City left three students dead and 20 others injured. The incident prompted calls for stronger school security and greater accountability over how firearms are stored and accessed.
Then, on August 18, another school shooting occurred at Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s high school campus. The attack left two students dead, including the student identified by authorities as the shooter. International reporting by AP and The Guardian said firearms used in the incident were being investigated, including questions surrounding access to weapons within the family.
Against that backdrop, the discovery of a firearm inside a Cebu student’s school bag has heightened concerns over how easily minors may gain access to guns.
Cebu authorities have already tightened security
Following the Tacloban shooting, several Cebu local governments increased security measures around schools, including greater police visibility, bag inspections, coordination with school officials and consideration of additional screening equipment.
The Police Regional Office 7 also conducted security inspections at schools in Cebu City and directed police personnel to maintain closer coordination with school authorities.
The latest incident in Pinamungajan underscores why those measures remain a major concern for educators, parents and law-enforcement officials.
For now, the case involving the 14-year-old remains under investigation. Authorities will have to establish the circumstances surrounding the firearm’s possession, its ownership and how it was accessed by the minor.
What began as a teacher’s surprise inspection ultimately prevented a potentially far more serious situation from unfolding inside a Cebu classroom.
