DANAO CITY, Cebu, Philippines — A 13-year-old boy died in a tragic accident after his neck reportedly became entangled in a rope used to restrain a sow at a pig pen in Barangay Cogon, Danao City.
The victim was identified by police as Carl James Laurente Gica, 13, a resident of Purok 5, Sitio Lang-Lang. The incident happened on the morning of September 5, 2026.
Father Asked Boy to Watch Newly Born Piglets
Based on the initial investigation by the Danao City Police Station, the boy’s father had reportedly asked him to watch over a sow that had recently given birth to prevent the piglets from being accidentally stepped on.
While Carl James was watching the animals, his father was inside their home sewing a cover for the pig pen.
A few minutes later, the father reportedly heard the piglets squealing and asked the victim’s 11-year-old sibling to check on Carl James.
But when the younger child returned, he told their father that he could not find his older brother.
The family immediately began searching the area.
Family Found Boy Unconscious Inside Pig Pen
The family was later shocked to find the 13-year-old boy hanging or suspended in a corner of the pig pen, unconscious, with a rope used for the sow tied around his neck, according to the police investigation cited by SunStar.
Neighbors rushed to help, and the boy was immediately taken to the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Danao City.
However, he was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
