Hong Kong actress Yoyo Mung has returned to the big screen after a six-year break from acting, with the 53-year-old opening up about her quieter life away from the entertainment industry.
Mung, who is married to Hong Kong singer-actor Ekin Cheng, had largely stayed out of the spotlight after her last screen appearance in Flying Tiger 2 in 2019. She is now making her comeback in the new film Good Trip, in which she plays the wife of actor Nick Cheung’s character.
Six Years Away From Acting
Mung discussed her decision to step away from showbiz during a recent appearance on the YouTube talk show Kam Shing Mode.
Rather than describing her years away as a difficult period, the actress said leaving the industry significantly reduced the amount of stress in her life.
Her return is relatively low-key, with Good Trip marking her first major acting project since her six-year hiatus.
The film is directed by Norris Wong and Wong Hoi and also stars Cheung and Golden Horse-winning actress Chung Suet Ying. It is scheduled to be released in Hong Kong on Oct. 15.
A Different Kind of Life
Mung’s absence from the entertainment industry has coincided with a much quieter lifestyle.
After marrying Cheng in Tokyo in 2013, the couple have spent considerable time in Japan. Mung has also been involved in property-related business activities in Fukuoka, where she has been reported to have worked with a real estate agency.
Her life away from television and film has meant fewer public appearances and less exposure to the pressures that come with being a celebrity.
Mung has previously spoken about her connection to Japan, and she and Cheng have frequently been associated with the country since their marriage.
Her New Film Role
In Good Trip, Mung takes on the role of a wife alongside Nick Cheung.
The film follows a film art department assistant who moves between a film set and a hospital while caring for her father, who has been diagnosed with cancer.
Although Mung was spotted wearing period-style clothing in an early teaser, the movie itself is set in modern times.
Her appearance in the film was initially noticed by fans before she formally discussed her return, making the project something of a quiet comeback.
Marriage To Ekin Cheng
Mung and Cheng have been married since 2013 and have generally kept their personal life away from the spotlight.
The couple’s relationship has often attracted attention because both have maintained strong connections to Japan. They married in Tokyo and have been reported to spend extended periods there.
In recent years, Mung has appeared occasionally alongside Cheng, including at his concerts, but she has largely remained outside Hong Kong’s entertainment scene.
In 2023, she attracted attention when she spoke Japanese at one of Cheng’s concerts, prompting some criticism from Chinese netizens. At the time, reports noted that Mung had been living in Japan and had developed business interests there.
A Return On Her Own Terms
Mung’s comeback does not appear to signal a full return to the hectic pace of her earlier career.
Instead, her comments about the reduced stress of life away from acting suggest that she is approaching the industry differently after years outside the spotlight.
For now, Good Trip gives audiences a chance to see Mung back on screen while allowing her to maintain the quieter lifestyle she has built since stepping away from regular acting.
After six years away, the actress is returning not because she needs to reclaim her former place in showbiz, but seemingly because the opportunity to act again appealed to her.
