Thailand’s Election Commission has reported a sharp increase in complaints as it handles a growing number of cases linked to elections and the selection of senators.
The surge has added to pressure on the seven-member commission, which is already dealing with several politically sensitive investigations and legal proceedings.
The Election Commission has received hundreds of complaints concerning the 2024 Senate selection process. As of September, it had ruled on 593 of 610 complaints related to the Senate election, leaving 17 cases unresolved.
The commission has also been pursuing cases involving candidates accused of lacking the qualifications required by law or having prohibited characteristics. In a separate decision this month, it ordered criminal proceedings against 1,767 Senate candidates over alleged qualification violations.
The increase in complaints comes as the commission continues its examination of alleged irregularities in the Senate selection process. The investigation has involved hundreds of respondents and a large volume of evidence.
The commission recently voted to refer 77 people, including 26 sitting senators, to the Supreme Court over alleged offences connected with the 2024 Senate election.
The cases involve allegations of improper coordination and violations of rules governing the Senate selection process. Those facing action will have the opportunity to contest the allegations through the legal system.
The Election Commission has defended its handling of the cases, saying it is exercising its authority independently and making decisions based on evidence and legal procedures.
The commission has also stressed that it is taking care to examine the available evidence before reaching decisions, amid growing public and political scrutiny of its work.
The growing number of complaints has increased the workload facing election officials and added to debate over how election-related allegations should be investigated and resolved.
The commission is expected to continue processing outstanding complaints while coordinating with courts and other agencies on cases that have moved into legal proceedings.
The latest developments highlight the expanding legal and administrative challenges facing Thailand’s election authorities as they deal with complaints involving both the Senate selection process and the qualifications of candidates.
