SINGAPORE — The funeral of Ng Lye Poh, affectionately known as the “Sheng Siong Ah Ma,” was surrounded by a remarkable “sea of flowers,” with more than 950 condolence wreaths reportedly sent to honor the beloved mother of the Sheng Siong supermarket bosses.
Ng died on September 5 at the age of 91, leaving behind nine children and a legacy closely tied to one of Singapore’s most recognizable supermarket chains.
A video shared on TikTok showed Sheng Siong managing director Lim Hock Leng standing among rows of condolence wreaths at Cairnhill Hall in Woodlands Memorial.
“Who else could have such a large sea of flowers?” Lim said as he looked around the funeral venue.
The overwhelming number of tributes deeply moved him.
“My mum’s karmic rewards are far too great,” he said while pressing his palms together in prayer.
More Than 950 Wreaths Sent
According to Lim, a caretaker told him that more than 950 wreaths had been received at the time the video was recorded.
He said the number could have gone beyond 2,000 had the family not advised members of the public against sending additional wreaths.
Inside the funeral hall, rows of flowers lined the venue, creating an extraordinary display of tributes.
Ng’s casket was also decorated with pink flowers arranged in the shape of a large heart, while additional wreaths were sent by prominent personalities, including members of Singapore’s political leadership.
‘Singapore’s National Treasure’
When asked in the video who his mother was, Lim proudly identified her as Ng Lye Poh before adding:
“She’s also Singapore’s national treasure.”
The emotional tribute reflected the enormous affection many Singaporeans had developed for Ng, whose story became intertwined with the rise of Sheng Siong from a family business into one of Singapore’s biggest supermarket chains.
A Mother Behind the Sheng Siong Story
Lim also reflected on his mother’s importance to the family’s success.
“Without her, there may have never been Sheng Siong,” according to the AsiaOne report.
Ng became widely known to Singaporeans as the mother of Sheng Siong’s founders and executives, but her family also experienced some of the country’s most difficult moments.
In 2014, Ng was kidnapped for ransom in a case that shocked Singapore. She was later safely released, while those responsible were arrested and prosecuted.
More than a decade later, the 91-year-old matriarch is now being remembered not for that frightening chapter, but for the love and respect surrounding her final farewell.
An Extraordinary Final Goodbye
For Lim Hock Leng, the hundreds of wreaths were more than just flowers.
They represented the relationships, goodwill and respect his mother had earned over her lifetime.
Standing in the middle of the enormous floral display, he repeatedly described the scene as a “sea of flowers.”
“This is too beautiful,” he said.
The funeral of the Sheng Siong Ah Ma has since drawn widespread attention online, with the extraordinary number of tributes becoming a powerful symbol of her family’s place in Singaporean society.
For the family behind one of Singapore’s most successful supermarket chains, the final farewell was a deeply personal moment.
But the sight of hundreds of wreaths also showed something much bigger:
A mother remembered with extraordinary love, and a legacy that reached far beyond her own family.
