ROBOTS ARE COMING FOR ROMBLON’S MARBLE INDUSTRY—BUT THE REAL REASON MAY SURPRISE YOU

ROMBLON, Philippines — The Philippines’ “Marble Capital” is preparing for a major technological shift as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) moves to bring robotics, automation, mechatronics and artificial intelligence (AI) into Romblon’s traditional marble industry.

The initiative is designed to help local marble businesses increase production, improve consistency and compete in larger domestic and international markets—while keeping the craftsmanship and cultural identity that have defined Romblon marble for generations.

Among the most anticipated developments is the planned introduction of a robotic arm for marble carving, with the technology expected to be introduced by the end of 2026, according to recent reports. DOST officials said the move is partly aimed at addressing a growing challenge: fewer young people are entering the traditional marble-carving profession as the existing artisan workforce ages.

But officials are stressing that this is not a plan to replace Romblon’s marble artisans with machines.

Instead, the technology is being positioned as an additional tool that can take on repetitive and precision-based production work, allowing artisans to concentrate on design, craftsmanship and higher-value products.

From traditional carving to smart manufacturing

DOST-MIMAROPA has been working with Romblon’s marble sector through its Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), providing technical assistance and access to modern equipment.

The technologies being introduced include mechatronics and robotic arms for production, AI-assisted approaches to sculpture design, lathe machines, cutting machines and other tools used by marble artisans. DOST says these technologies can help improve production speed, quality, consistency and the ability to reproduce designs at higher volumes.

For businesses that have struggled to accept larger orders because of limited production capacity, automation could become a critical advantage.

The goal is straightforward: produce more without sacrificing quality.

Romblon Marble Industry Council General Manager Myrna Bien Silverio said modern technology could help the industry respond to orders that previously had to be declined because producers could not meet the required volume or consistency.

The bigger problem: Who will carry the industry forward?

Behind the push for robotics is a deeper concern about the future of the marble trade.

DOST officials have repeatedly pointed to the aging workforce of marble artisans and the need to attract younger Romblomanons into the industry.

When DOST formally turned over Romblon’s 10-year Marble Industry Roadmap in 2025, DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. called for greater youth participation, emphasizing that the sector must move beyond relying solely on physical labor and invest in design, innovation and sustainability.

That makes automation more than a productivity project. It is also an attempt to make marble manufacturing more relevant to a younger, technology-oriented workforce.

A 10-year plan to take Romblon global

The robotics initiative forms part of a much broader 2025–2035 roadmap for the Romblon marble industry.

The roadmap seeks to strengthen the local market, expand distribution into regional and international markets, improve product design and upgrade the skills of workers. It was developed through collaboration involving DOST-MIMAROPA and the University of the Philippines.

Romblon is already recognized as the “Marble Capital of the Philippines,” with its marble products reaching markets including Japan, China and the United States.

The province now wants to move further up the value chain—from primarily producing traditional marble items toward developing more innovative, higher-value and globally competitive products.

AI could change what Romblon marble looks like

The modernization effort does not stop with robotic carving.

DOST has also identified artificial intelligence as a potential tool for designing marble sculptures, giving artisans another way to develop and refine concepts before production.

That could eventually allow traditional craftsmanship and digital design to work side by side: artisans supplying the cultural knowledge and creative direction, while digital tools help turn concepts into repeatable production designs.

The approach reflects DOST’s broader push to integrate science and technology into traditional industries rather than treating modernization and heritage as opposing goals.

Even marble waste could become a new business opportunity

Another potentially significant part of the roadmap involves making better use of marble waste.

DOST has proposed research into ground calcium carbonate derived from marble cuttings for applications such as paint additives. Marble dust is also being explored as a possible material for future research and development, including the possibility of applications in 3D-printing-related products.

This gives the modernization program another dimension: turning what was once considered waste into additional products and revenue streams.

That fits into the government’s broader push toward a circular economy, where more of the raw material is utilized instead of discarded.

A Marble Center and digital traceability are also in the pipeline

DOST-MIMAROPA has also reported plans for a Marble Center focused on research, product development, innovation and marble by-products.

Meanwhile, a blockchain-based traceability mechanism is being pursued to help identify and track products made by the local marble industry. Training for workers is another component of the modernization strategy.

The larger ambition is to keep more of the marble supply chain inside Romblon and eventually strengthen the province’s capacity to serve export markets directly.

The technology push is already gaining momentum

The marble initiative is unfolding as Romblon hosts the 2026 Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Week, where DOST is showcasing technologies designed specifically for island communities.

The event includes the MARBLE Center of Romblon State University, which conducts research on sustainable uses of Romblon marble, develops marble-based products and explores opportunities for local communities. Forums are also tackling next-generation marble processing and the circular economy.

This suggests that the robotics plan is not an isolated experiment. It is becoming part of a larger technology ecosystem involving government agencies, universities, researchers, businesses and local communities.

The real test begins when the machines arrive

For Romblon, the arrival of robotics could mark a turning point—but the technology itself will not guarantee success.

The industry will still need skilled workers who can operate and maintain advanced equipment, designers who can create products with global appeal, businesses capable of meeting international standards and a new generation willing to see marble carving as a modern career rather than an aging traditional trade.

DOST’s strategy is therefore less about machines replacing artisans and more about artisans gaining new machines.

If the plan works, Romblon’s marble industry could enter a new era in which centuries-old craftsmanship is combined with robotics, AI, digital design and sustainable manufacturing.

And that could change the biggest question facing the Marble Capital of the Philippines—not whether its traditions can survive technology, but whether technology can help those traditions reach a much bigger world.
