OFWs in Saudi Arabia Warned to Avoid Oil and Military Sites as Attacks Escalate—What Filipinos Need to Know

MANILA, Philippines — Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Saudi Arabia are being urged to exercise heightened caution and avoid potentially targeted locations, including oil facilities and military installations, as attacks and regional tensions raise security concerns across the kingdom.

The advisory underscores the importance of staying alert, following instructions from Saudi authorities, and keeping in contact with Philippine diplomatic and migrant-worker assistance offices.

For Filipino workers living and earning a livelihood in Saudi Arabia, the situation is particularly concerning because the country is a major destination for Philippine migrant workers and a significant source of remittances sent home to their families.

Safety warning follows attacks on Saudi targets

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has advised Filipinos in Saudi Arabia to avoid areas that could be targeted in attacks, including military installations and oil refineries. Workers near airports have also been advised to stay away from crowded areas.

The guidance followed attacks affecting Riyadh, including an October 10, 2026, incident at King Khalid International Airport that Saudi authorities reported had killed at least 12 people and injured more than 300. Philippine news reports said Filipino nationals were among those injured.

The DMW has urged OFWs to monitor official announcements, coordinate with Philippine government offices when assistance is needed, and take precautions when travelling.

Filipino workers among those injured

The situation has already affected Filipino workers. On October 19, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported that seven Filipinos had been wounded in attacks in Saudi Arabia, with three in critical condition.

The DFA said it was coordinating with the DMW and Saudi authorities to help provide medical care and other assistance to those affected. The Philippine government also called for an end to hostilities and urged parties to pursue a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.

The developments highlight the risks faced by migrant workers when civilian areas, transport facilities, and critical infrastructure are affected by regional conflict.

Why oil facilities and military sites are a concern

Oil infrastructure and military installations may be considered strategic targets during armed conflict. Staying away from these locations when authorities issue warnings can help workers reduce unnecessary exposure to danger.

OFWs should also avoid approaching impact sites, photographing or recording security incidents, or sharing sensitive images and videos online. Philippine reporting has noted that Saudi authorities may impose penalties for prohibited photography or publication related to attacks.

Workers should follow official security instructions rather than relying on unverified social media posts or rumours.

What OFWs should do now

Filipinos in Saudi Arabia are encouraged to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid high-risk locations. Stay away from military installations, oil facilities, and other areas identified by local authorities as potential targets.
  • Monitor official announcements. Follow advisories from Saudi authorities, the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh, the Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah, and the DMW.
  • Check flights before travelling. Confirm flight status directly with airlines before leaving for the airport, particularly if travelling to or from Riyadh.
  • Keep emergency contacts accessible. Save the contact details of Philippine diplomatic missions and Migrant Workers Offices.
  • Stay in touch with family and employers. Establish a reliable communication plan and follow workplace emergency procedures.
  • Do not spread unverified reports. Verify casualty figures, security alerts, and evacuation information through official sources.

Where OFWs can seek assistance

Filipinos who need help can contact the following Philippine offices in Saudi Arabia. These numbers were published in Philippine news reports and should be verified against the latest official contact listings when possible.

  • Philippine Embassy in Riyadh — Assistance to Nationals: +966 56 989 3301
  • Migrant Workers Office (MWO), Riyadh: +966 50 285 0944
  • Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah — Assistance to Nationals: +966 55 521 9613
  • MWO, Jeddah: +966 56 981 9720
  • MWO, Eastern Region / Al Khobar: +966 56 232 9926

OFWs should use official embassy and DMW channels for updated instructions, emergency assistance, and information about any changes to local security conditions.

A developing situation for Filipino families

The security situation remains a serious concern for Filipinos working in Saudi Arabia, particularly those whose jobs bring them near transport hubs, industrial facilities, or other sensitive locations.

The immediate priority is to follow verified safety advisories and avoid unnecessary exposure to danger. Families in the Philippines should maintain contact with their relatives abroad and rely on official government updates rather than unconfirmed claims.

As developments continue, OFWs should watch for further announcements from Philippine authorities concerning worker assistance, travel disruptions, and any changes to the security guidance.

For now, vigilance, reliable information, and compliance with local safety instructions remain essential for Filipinos working and living in Saudi Arabia.
