Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, will not face the death penalty if convicted in the killings of his parents, Los Angeles County prosecutors said.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the decision on Sept 15 following a review of the case and discussions with members of the Reiner family.
Reiner, 33, has been charged with two counts of murder with special circumstances in connection with the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home in December 2025.
Prosecutors allege that Reiner killed his parents and that the attacks involved lying in wait. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
If convicted, Reiner now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors said their decision not to seek capital punishment followed an assessment of aggravating and mitigating factors in the case.
Reiner’s public defender, Kimberly Greene, said his legal team supported the decision. She said Reiner has a serious mental illness and a history of struggling with self-medication, although the case remains pending and no court has determined his guilt.
Reiner was indicted by a grand jury in July. Prosecutors have provided limited public information about the circumstances surrounding the deaths, while a dispute continues over whether the grand jury transcripts should be released.
Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romi, have opposed making the transcripts public, saying their release could cause additional trauma to the family. A judge is expected to hear arguments over the issue at a later hearing.
Reiner is also seeking access to money from a trust established by his parents during his childhood. His lawyers want the funds to help him hire former attorney Alan Jackson, who previously represented him in the case.
The trustees have opposed releasing the money, while Reiner’s lawyers argue that he remains legally entitled to the trust funds because he has not been convicted.
The case is expected to go to trial next year, although no trial date has been set. Reiner remains in custody without bail while the legal proceedings continue.
