Museo del Galeón is preparing to expand its lineup of programs and activities as the newly opened maritime museum at the SM Mall of Asia Complex seeks to attract more visitors and encourage repeat visits.
The museum, which opened in May, has welcomed thousands of visitors ranging from students and families to tourists, corporate groups and culture enthusiasts. Its programs so far have included private tours, workshops, expert talks and after-hours experiences.
The four-level, 9,000-square-meter museum features a full-scale representation of the 17th-century Galeón Espíritu Santo, built from fiberglass by local artisans. Its exhibits use interactive displays, immersive storytelling and audiovisual elements to explore the Philippines’ maritime heritage and the historic Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade.
Museo del Galeón plans to introduce more after-hours activities, expert-led talks, youth workshops and collaborations with brands. The expansion is intended to give visitors different ways to experience the museum while broadening its appeal to different audiences.
One recent after-hours event combined museum access with a curated cocktail experience, a guided cocktail journey and maritime trivia. The program demonstrated how the museum is exploring activities beyond traditional exhibitions to create more interactive experiences for visitors.
The museum has also attracted support from companies and individuals through sponsorship opportunities. Among its permanent installations are 181 floating galleons, which can be sponsored and carry the sponsor’s name as part of the museum’s broader cultural and educational program.
Museo del Galeón is part of SM Prime Holdings’ broader efforts to expand cultural and tourism offerings at the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay. Its location within the complex provides access to a large mix of local visitors, tourists and business groups.
The museum’s focus on the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade highlights a period when the Philippines served as a key link between Asia and the Americas through maritime commerce. By combining historical displays with live programming, the museum aims to make that history accessible to audiences beyond traditional museum visitors.
With additional programs planned, Museo del Galeón is positioning itself not only as a destination for learning about Philippine maritime history but also as a venue for workshops, talks, cultural activities and private experiences.
The expansion reflects a broader effort to keep the museum experience evolving, giving visitors new reasons to return while bringing Philippine maritime heritage to a wider audience.
