MIMAROPA Just Took a Major Leap in 3D Printing—Here’s What WPU and DOST Are Building in Palawan

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, PALAWAN — A new chapter in regional technology and manufacturing is taking shape in Palawan as Western Philippines University (WPU) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) launched the Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMCen) MIMAROPA at the university’s Puerto Princesa Campus on August 17, 2026.

The facility is expected to give researchers, students, innovators, entrepreneurs, and local industries in Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan greater access to technologies that can turn digital designs and research ideas into actual prototypes and products.

The launch brings advanced manufacturing closer to communities that have traditionally faced geographic and cost barriers in accessing specialized equipment and technical expertise.

From digital designs to real-world products

At the heart of AMCen is additive manufacturing, more commonly known as 3D printing.

Unlike conventional manufacturing methods that often involve cutting, milling, molding, or machining materials into a desired shape, additive manufacturing builds an object layer by layer based on a digital design.

That capability can significantly shorten the path from concept to prototype.

DOST’s national AMCen program describes the facility as a technological hub focused on additive manufacturing and designed to strengthen the country’s technical readiness, business sophistication, and innovation capacity. Its services include manufacturing, engineering, materials development, research, and training.

For MIMAROPA, having that capability closer to home could be particularly important for universities, startups, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and researchers developing products suited to local needs.

Why the Palawan facility matters

The WPU facility is not operating in isolation.

It forms part of a growing innovation ecosystem at the university that already includes the Palawan Innovation Hub (Palawan iHub) and the Palawan Innolab.

DOST-MIMAROPA said the Palawan iHub was established at WPU’s Puerto Princesa City Campus to support startups, innovators, researchers, and local communities through business consultancy, design-thinking activities, business-model development, mentorship, and connections with technology incubators.

The combination creates a potentially powerful pipeline:

idea → research → design → prototype → testing → commercialization.

That is precisely the gap many innovators struggle to cross.

An idea may be promising on paper, but without access to equipment, technical expertise, materials, prototyping facilities, and business support, turning that idea into a market-ready product can become expensive and time-consuming.

AMCen is intended to help close that gap.

A bigger national push for advanced manufacturing

The MIMAROPA launch also reflects a broader DOST strategy to decentralize advanced manufacturing capabilities across the Philippines.

DOST has established AMCens in several regions, with facilities designed to support product prototyping, manufacturing, materials development, training, consultancy, and other 3D-printing applications.

In September 2025, DOST opened its seventh AMCen in Laguna, describing the facilities as an investment not only in equipment but also in developing engineers, researchers, and innovators who can work with emerging technologies.

Earlier in 2025, DOST also inaugurated an AMCen in Cagayan Valley, equipped with design and simulation software, workstations, 3D printers, and a 3D scanner intended to support prototyping and technical training.

In Zamboanga Peninsula, the regional AMCen was likewise positioned as a way for students, researchers, and industries to gain local access to advanced manufacturing and 3D-printing technologies. DOST said the facility can help accelerate prototype development while reducing some of the traditional costs associated with tooling.

What could this mean for MIMAROPA?

The potential impact goes beyond 3D-printed objects.

For MSMEs, advanced manufacturing can open opportunities for customized components, product development, small-batch production, and rapid prototyping.

For students and researchers, it provides a pathway to move projects beyond laboratory concepts and into physical prototypes.

For startups, faster prototyping can make it easier to test, modify, and improve a product before investing heavily in full-scale production.

For local industries, digital manufacturing technologies can help address the need for customized or difficult-to-source components.

DOST has previously emphasized that AMCen’s capabilities can support the development of complex parts and components that may be difficult or expensive to produce through conventional manufacturing.

Palawan is already building an innovation network

The AMCen launch comes as Palawan’s innovation ecosystem continues to expand.

In December 2025, DOST-MIMAROPA, WPU, and the Palawan ICT Council launched the Palawan iHub at WPU’s Puerto Princesa campus. The facility was designed to serve as a pre-incubator for startups at the ideation and pre-seed stages.

DOST reported that the province already had more than 1,200 iHub users, alongside innovation activities, research and business consultations, and agreements aimed at strengthening the local innovation ecosystem.

The timing is significant.

DOST-MIMAROPA’s 2026 regional science, technology and innovation activities have also placed emphasis on bringing science and technology closer to communities across the region. This year’s Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Week was hosted in Palawan, with activities involving WPU and other institutions.

The bigger question: Can ideas become industries?

The launch of AMCen-MIMAROPA gives the region something it has long needed: closer access to advanced tools for turning concepts into tangible products.

But the real measure of its success will not simply be the number of machines installed or prototypes produced.

The bigger test will be whether those capabilities lead to new businesses, stronger local industries, commercially viable technologies, skilled workers, and solutions to problems unique to MIMAROPA.

With AMCen now operating alongside innovation and incubation facilities at WPU, the pieces of that ecosystem are beginning to come together.

And if researchers, students, entrepreneurs, MSMEs, government agencies, and industry partners fully use those facilities, Palawan could become more than a regional consumer of new technology—it could become a place where the next generation of Filipino products is actually designed, tested, and built.
