A romantic relationship ended behind bars after police arrested a 37-year-old man and his 29-year-old female companion during an anti-illegal drug operation in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, authorities said.
The two suspects, identified only by their aliases “Jay-ar” and “Cheryl,” were arrested during a buy-bust operation conducted around noon on August 22, 2026, in Purok 2, Barangay 9, Malaybalay City.
Police identified Jay-ar as a Street-Level Individual (SLI) in their drug-enforcement operation. Both suspects were taken into custody following the operation.
Police seize more than 5 grams of suspected shabu
According to the police report cited by Bombo Radyo Malaybalay, authorities recovered approximately 5.074 grams of suspected shabu, with a reported standard drug price of ₱34,503.
The operation also resulted in the confiscation of the buy-bust money and other pieces of evidence connected to the operation.
The operation was carried out by personnel of the City Drug Enforcement Unit (CDEU) of the Malaybalay City Police Station, with assistance from the 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company (1st PMFC) and the Bukidnon Provincial Intelligence Unit (PIU).
Both suspects remain in police custody
Following their arrest, Jay-ar and Cheryl were brought to the Malaybalay City Police Station detention facility, where they remained in custody while authorities prepared the appropriate criminal complaint.
Police said the suspects are being prepared for charges under Republic Act No. 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. The available police report does not specify in its published account which particular provisions of the law will ultimately be charged.
That distinction is important because an arrest following a buy-bust operation does not by itself establish guilt. The seized substance is still subject to the required evidentiary and legal processes, and the suspects remain entitled to due process.

Recent reports from other parts of Northern Mindanao likewise show police continuing to use buy-bust operations against suspected street-level drug activity. For example, Bombo Radyo Cagayan de Oro reported in July that police arrested a 21-year-old suspect and seized an estimated ₱34,000 worth of suspected shabu in Barangay Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City.
The Philippine National Police and regional law-enforcement units routinely coordinate these operations with drug-enforcement and intelligence personnel, with seized substances generally subjected to forensic examination as part of the case-building process.
What happens next?
For the Malaybalay couple, the next stage is the filing and evaluation of the appropriate complaint under the dangerous-drugs law.
