South Korean pianist Lim Yunchan is back in contention for one of classical music’s most prestigious recording prizes, earning another nomination for the 2026 Gramophone Classical Music Awards just two years after making history with a double victory.
Lim’s recording of J.S. Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” has been shortlisted in the Piano category, putting the young Korean pianist in the running for another major international honor. The album, released in February 2026, features a live recording from his sold-out performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall in April 2025.
From historic breakthrough to another Gramophone nomination
The latest nomination adds another chapter to Lim’s remarkably rapid rise on the international classical music stage.
In 2024, Lim became the first Korean pianist to win the Gramophone Piano Award, taking the prize for his Decca Classics recording of Chopin’s Études. He also won Young Artist of the Year, giving him two awards at the same ceremony.
That 2024 achievement followed another defining moment in his career: in 2022, Lim won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at age 18, becoming the youngest winner in the competition’s history. His performance at the competition helped propel him to worldwide attention.
This time, Bach replaces Chopin
Lim’s latest Gramophone contender is markedly different from the recording that brought him his historic 2024 victory.
His “Goldberg Variations” recording centers on Bach’s monumental keyboard work and comes from his Carnegie Hall performance in 2025. The recording has already strengthened his reputation beyond the Gramophone Awards: in June 2026, it earned Lim the Instrumentalist of the Year honor at Germany’s Opus Klassik awards.
The recognition means Lim is entering the Gramophone race with considerable momentum.
The 2026 Piano category also features recordings by other internationally recognized pianists, making Lim’s latest nomination a competitive field rather than a guaranteed repeat victory. The Gramophone Awards shortlist was narrowed to three recordings in each of 11 categories.
When will the 2026 Gramophone winner be announced?
The 2026 Gramophone Classical Music Awards ceremony is scheduled for October 7 in London at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms.
The awards, established by British classical-music magazine Gramophone in 1977, are regarded as among the most influential honors in the classical recording industry.
For Lim, a second Piano Award would carry particular significance. His 2024 victory already established him as the first Korean pianist to win the category; another triumph would further cement his position among the leading pianists of his generation.
A fast-rising Korean classical music star
Lim’s international profile has grown rapidly since his Van Cliburn breakthrough.
His Chopin Études debut recording received major critical recognition and won the 2024 Gramophone Piano Award, while his career has since expanded through performances with major orchestras and appearances at prominent international festivals and concert halls.
His 2026 Opus Klassik victory adds to a growing collection of international honors, demonstrating that his Grammy-era-level recognition in classical music is not limited to a single breakthrough recording.
Now, the question is whether Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” can deliver another Gramophone trophy.
