He Pushed the Man Who Attacked His Father — Then the 78-Year-Old Died Days Later

SINGAPORE — A split-second decision to defend his father has resulted in a nine-month jail sentence for a 37-year-old man after the elderly man he pushed fell, hit his head and later died.

Jimmy Yar Hock Long was sentenced on Thursday (Aug 27) after pleading guilty to voluntarily causing hurt that resulted in grievous hurt. The case has drawn attention because the fatal confrontation began after Yar’s 70-year-old father was allegedly struck on the head with an umbrella by the 78-year-old victim, Goh Kim Inn.

A Long-Running Dispute Turns Fatal

According to court reports, Yar and his father were crossing the road near the junction of Upper Serangoon Road and Wolskel Road shortly before 9am on May 25, 2025, when Goh approached them from behind.

Goh allegedly struck Yar’s father on the head with an umbrella. Yar then rushed towards Goh and pushed him to the ground. The 78-year-old fell, struck his head and became unresponsive. He was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he died two days later from his head injury.

The confrontation was not an isolated encounter. Court reports said Goh and Yar’s father had a history of altercations, although the reasons behind their dispute were not disclosed in court documents. Goh had previously assaulted Yar’s father on two occasions in 2024 and received police warnings, while Yar’s father was also warned over a separate public fight involving Goh.

Prosecutors and Defence Disagreed Over the Sentence

Prosecutors sought between 10 months and a year in jail, highlighting the devastating outcome of the push.

Yar’s lawyers, however, argued for a sentence of no more than eight months, saying he had reacted spontaneously after witnessing a surprise attack on his elderly father. The court was also told that Yar’s father undergoes regular kidney dialysis and is recovering from stage four cancer.

The court ultimately sentenced Yar to nine months’ jail. His bail was set at $20,000, and he is expected to begin serving his sentence on Sept 28, according to The Straits Times.

One Push, Irreversible Consequences

The tragedy underscores how quickly a physical confrontation can escalate. Singapore courts have previously dealt with cases in which a shove or push resulted in catastrophic head injuries after victims fell and struck hard surfaces.

In a separate 2025 case, a retiree received a jail sentence after pushing a 90-year-old man during an argument; the victim fell backwards, hit his head and later died.

While the circumstances of every case are different, the latest case is a stark reminder that even a single push can have consequences far beyond what anyone involved may have intended.

For Yar, an instinctive reaction to an attack on his father ended with a man dead — and a prison sentence that will now follow.
