MANILA, Philippines — Karate Pilipinas president Richard “Ricky” Lim received a special birthday surprise with some prominent friends joining the celebration, including businessman Hans Sy and his wife Caroline Sy, as the veteran sports leader approaches one of the biggest assignments of his career.
A Bilyonaryo report published on August 30 said the Sy couple joined the birthday surprise for Lim, adding a high-profile touch to what appeared to be a warm gathering of friends around the longtime Philippine karate official.
But the timing of the celebration makes the occasion particularly significant for Lim.
Just weeks after his birthday, Lim is expected to shift his attention from celebrations to the enormous task of helping oversee Team Philippines at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
The Philippine Olympic Committee appointed Lim as the country’s chef de mission in July after Al Panlilio stepped down from the position. POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino said Lim already has experience with the job, having served as chef de mission for the 2025 Asian Winter Games in Harbin and deputy chef de mission at the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.
That means Lim will be carrying responsibilities far beyond karate when the Philippine delegation arrives in Japan.
Hundreds of Filipino athletes are expected to compete across dozens of sports at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, with Olympic double-gold medalist Carlos Yulo among the biggest names in the national delegation.
From Karate Athlete to Philippine Sports Leader
Lim’s rise in Philippine sports has been decades in the making.
Long before becoming an administrator, he built his life around karate. Daily Tribune reported in 2025 that Lim grew up in a karate family and was introduced to the martial art at an early age through his father, one of the country’s early karate practitioners and a founder of the Association for the Advancement of Karatedo or AAK.
Today, Lim heads Karate Pilipinas Sports Federation, where his administration has placed particular emphasis on developing younger Filipino athletes.
That grassroots push received international exposure in May when Manila hosted the Karate 1-Youth League at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The tournament attracted competitors from more than 50 countries and territories, giving young Filipino karatekas the opportunity to compete against athletes at the world level. Lim told GMA News that hosting the tournament was designed partly to give the country’s next generation of athletes international-quality competition as today’s senior national-team members eventually retire.
The Philippines ultimately finished the home tournament with six medals on its final day, including two under-14 gold medals — results Lim described as evidence that Karate Pilipinas’ grassroots program was beginning to produce results.
Hans Sy’s Connection Adds Business-World Spotlight
The presence of Hans and Caroline Sy also gives Lim’s birthday celebration a notable crossover between Philippine sports and some of the country’s most prominent business circles.
Hans Sy is currently chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings and has served as a director of the property giant since 1994. He is also chairman of China Banking Corporation and National University and serves as an adviser to the board of SM Investments Corporation.
His association with Philippine sports is not entirely surprising. National University, which Sy chairs, has built a significant presence in collegiate athletics, while the wider SM organization has also been involved in major sporting events.
The SM Group of Companies, for example, was among the organizations supporting the Philippines’ staging of the Karate 1-Youth League earlier this year.
Celebration Before the Pressure Builds
For Lim, however, the birthday gathering comes just before the pressure rises considerably.
By September, his focus will extend beyond Karate Pilipinas as he helps coordinate the needs of an entire Philippine delegation competing against Asia’s best athletes.
It is a striking transition: from a surprise birthday celebration surrounded by friends — including Hans and Caroline Sy — to helping carry the country’s sporting ambitions on one of Asia’s biggest stages.
And with the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games only weeks away, Lim may have received his birthday surprise just before the real challenge of 2026 begins.
