SINGAPORE — Former Japan football superstar and AC Milan midfielder Keisuke Honda has officially embarked on one of the most surprising chapters of his storied career—bringing his experience, ambition and global star power to Singapore football with Singapore Premier League (SPL) club FC Jurong.
Honda, one of Japan’s most recognisable footballers, was announced as a signing earlier this year when the club was still known as Albirex Niigata Singapore. The team has since transitioned into FC Jurong, marking a new era for the club and adding even greater significance to the arrival of one of Asian football’s biggest names.
The 40-year-old was officially unveiled at Jurong East Stadium on Aug 22, where he made his ambitions clear: he wants FC Jurong to compete at the top of Singapore football.
“Being a player is my passion,” Honda said, expressing his desire to continue competing while setting his sights on helping his new club challenge for the Singapore Premier League title.
A World Cup Star Lands in Singapore
Honda arrives with a football résumé few players in the region can match. The former attacking midfielder earned 98 caps and scored 37 goals for Japan, representing his country at three FIFA World Cups in 2010, 2014 and 2018.
His club career also took him across some of football’s most competitive leagues, including high-profile spells with CSKA Moscow and Italian giants AC Milan, before playing in countries such as Australia, Brazil and Portugal.
Now, Singapore represents another unexpected stop in a career defined by reinvention.
Honda has also developed ties with the country outside football. He previously revealed that he spends a significant amount of time in Singapore and travels frequently between Singapore, Japan and other countries due to his investment work. He was also spotted training locally before his move was officially confirmed.
