SAN FRANCISCO, United States — October 30, 2026. Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has returned to profitability after three consecutive quarterly losses, reporting nearly $719 million in third-quarter net income despite a sharp decline in revenue as crypto trading activity weakened.
The result initially appears to signal a dramatic comeback for one of the world’s most prominent publicly traded digital-asset companies.
But a closer look at its October 29 financial statements reveals a more complicated picture.
Coinbase reported $1.216 billion in total revenue, down approximately 35% from $1.869 billion a year earlier.
Transaction revenue fell to about $590 million, while subscription and services revenue reached approximately $570 million.
The company’s reported profit benefited significantly from a $715-million gain on cryptocurrency investments.
After excluding specified investment-related gains and related tax adjustments, adjusted net income was approximately $78 million.
The contrast raises a question for shareholders: Is Coinbase’s return to profitability evidence of a stronger underlying business, or is the exchange still vulnerable to the next major swing in cryptocurrency prices?
Coinbase returns to profit after three losing quarters
Coinbase reported net income of $718.7 million for the quarter ended September 30, compared with approximately $433 million during the same period last year.
Diluted earnings reached $2.51 per share.
The company had recorded losses in the preceding three quarters, making the latest result an important improvement in its reported financial position.
Wall Street analysts had generally expected a loss, although the precise consensus varied by financial-data provider.
However, analysts and investors are also examining the composition of the profit.
Coinbase recorded approximately $715 million in gains on crypto assets held for investment.
Under the company’s non-GAAP reconciliation, it excluded those gains, other investment gains and associated tax effects to calculate adjusted net income of $77.7 million.
The adjusted figure is substantially smaller than reported earnings.
This does not make the reported profit fictitious. The accounting gain is recognized under applicable reporting rules.
But it means the headline result should not be presented as evidence that Coinbase earned nearly $719 million from ordinary exchange operations.
The $715-million gain is the most important earnings detail
Coinbase holds cryptocurrency as part of its corporate investment portfolio.
Changes in the market value of those holdings can affect reported profit.
During the third quarter, cryptocurrency prices recovered from earlier weakness, increasing the value of assets the company held for investment.
The resulting gains contributed heavily to net income.
Such gains can reverse if market prices decline.
They are also distinct from revenue collected by charging customers trading fees.
That distinction is central to evaluating Coinbase’s financial performance.
An investor assessing the exchange’s future profitability needs to consider both its operating businesses and its exposure to fluctuations in crypto investment values.
Coinbase’s adjusted net income offers one additional perspective, although it is a company-defined non-GAAP measure rather than a replacement for reported earnings.
Revenue drops 35% as crypto trading slows
While reported profit rose, total revenue fell substantially.
Coinbase generated $1.216 billion during the third quarter, compared with $1.869 billion a year earlier.
Revenue was roughly unchanged from the second quarter.
The weakness reflected softer cryptocurrency trading activity and comparatively low market volatility.
Trading exchanges generally benefit when users buy and sell more frequently.
When prices stabilize or investor interest declines, transaction activity can weaken, reducing fee revenue.
Coinbase reported that total market cryptocurrency trading volume fell approximately 10% from the second quarter.
Its own transaction revenue declined only about 1% sequentially, showing that gains in market share and new products helped offset part of the industry slowdown.
Nevertheless, the year-on-year figures remain challenging.
They demonstrate that Coinbase has not eliminated its dependence on overall digital-asset trading conditions.
Transaction revenue plunges to $590 million
Transaction revenue totaled approximately $590.2 million, down around 44% year on year.
This remains one of Coinbase’s largest revenue categories.
Consumer transaction revenue was approximately $450 million.
Institutional transaction revenue reached about $92 million, while other transaction revenue contributed roughly $48 million.
The composition of those revenues is changing.
Coinbase is expanding beyond conventional purchases and sales of Bitcoin, Ether and other cryptocurrencies.
Newer products include futures, options and prediction markets.
The company reported that derivatives and prediction markets together generated about 25% of its third-quarter transaction revenue.
That figure suggests growing diversification within the trading business itself.
But it also introduces different market, regulatory and operational risks.
Coinbase gains crypto trading market share
One of the quarter’s strongest operational indicators was Coinbase’s market-share performance.
The company reported that its share of cryptocurrency trading volume reached 10.7%, marking its fourth consecutive quarter of market-share gains.
The increase covered both spot and derivatives trading.
Coinbase also said assets held on its platform represented approximately 12.5% of total cryptocurrency market capitalization.
These percentages are based on company-defined measurements and should be interpreted according to the definitions in its earnings presentation.
The gains are significant because they indicate that Coinbase may be attracting a larger portion of industry activity even while overall market conditions remain weak.
However, higher market share does not guarantee higher absolute revenue.
A company can win a greater share of a shrinking market and still earn less money.
That is precisely the challenge Coinbase is trying to overcome.
Stablecoins become a major financial engine
Coinbase’s subscription and services business is increasingly important.
Revenue from this segment reached approximately $570 million during the third quarter.
That was down about 20% from a year earlier, but up approximately 3% from the previous quarter.
The category accounted for 49% of net revenue.
Stablecoin-related revenue was approximately $307 million, supported by growing use of USDC.
Coinbase reported that the average USDC held within its products reached a record $22 billion, up 49% from a year earlier.
Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a relatively stable value, commonly linked to the US dollar.
USDC is issued by Circle, while Coinbase participates in the broader ecosystem through distribution, integration and commercial arrangements.
The exchange benefits from certain revenues associated with that activity.
But growth in USDC balances does not mean Coinbase directly owns all $22 billion as unrestricted corporate cash.
Those balances relate to the use of USDC within Coinbase products.
Wall Street’s stablecoin ambitions are expanding
The stablecoin market is attracting interest from traditional banking institutions.
WWC ONE MEDIA previously examined this trend in Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and 19 Financial Giants Are Building a Dollar Stablecoin — What Happens Next Could Reshape Global Payments.
The article discussed a proposed bank-backed digital dollar involving major international financial institutions.
Such projects could create new competition for established stablecoin ecosystems.
For Coinbase, a broader stablecoin market presents both opportunities and threats.
Greater adoption could support digital-dollar payments and trading activity.
But competition could also influence the revenue Coinbase earns from its existing commercial relationships.
Stablecoin regulation, reserve management and interest-rate conditions will remain important factors.
Prediction markets exceed $200 million in annualized revenue
One of Coinbase’s fastest-growing businesses is prediction markets.
The company said the product category surpassed $200 million in annualized revenue during the third quarter.
That figure is not the same as earning $200 million during the quarter.
It represents a revenue pace expressed on an annual basis.
Coinbase also said the number of daily prediction-market traders increased by more than 60% from the previous quarter.
Prediction markets allow participants to trade contracts linked to the outcome of future events.
These can involve economic data, political developments, financial markets, entertainment or sports.
The company said more than half the contracts traded in the third quarter were related to nonsports events.
Management considers the category attractive because demand may be less directly correlated with conventional cryptocurrency price movements.
However, prediction markets face ongoing disputes about regulation, consumer protection and the treatment of event-based contracts.
Explosive prediction-market volumes require careful interpretation
The wider prediction-market industry has experienced rapid growth.
But headline trading statistics can sometimes be misleading without proper context.
WWC ONE MEDIA previously explored the issue in Prediction Markets Are Posting Explosive Trading Volumes — But Combo Contracts Are Making the Boom Look Even Bigger.
The report explained how some platforms calculate notional trading volume, particularly for low-priced combination contracts.
Notional volume is different from the money customers actually pay for contracts.
This distinction also matters when evaluating Coinbase’s growth.
An annualized revenue run rate, trading volume, number of users and actual recognized quarterly revenue are separate business measures.
Investors should avoid treating them as interchangeable evidence of profitability.
The question is whether prediction markets can produce sustainable earnings after operating costs, incentives and regulatory requirements.
Coinbase One subscriptions reach a new high
Coinbase also reported record paid subscriptions to Coinbase One.
The number of paying members increased 24% from a year earlier.
According to the company, these users have higher average revenue, larger balances and better long-term trading retention than the broader user base.
Subscriptions can help reduce dependence on volatile trading fees by generating recurring revenue.
However, maintaining subscriber growth requires delivering services customers consider valuable.
Customers may cancel subscriptions if benefits weaken or competing platforms offer better pricing.
The long-term contribution of Coinbase One will depend on retention, membership economics and customer engagement.
Tokenized stocks could become Coinbase’s next growth market
Coinbase is also expanding its presence in tokenized financial assets.
The company reported that tokenized-stock volume on its Base network had exceeded $1 billion since launch.
That is cumulative trading volume, not $1 billion in company revenue.
Tokenization involves representing assets such as securities using blockchain technology.
Advocates argue that it could improve transfer efficiency and enable new trading arrangements.
WWC ONE MEDIA examined the regulatory opportunities in The SEC Just Opened a Five-Year Door for Tokenized Stocks — But There’s a Catch.
The article explored the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s temporary regulatory pathway for eligible tokenized securities trading.
The development could create opportunities for Coinbase and other digital-asset companies.
But the regulatory framework does not mean every crypto exchange has blanket permission to trade all tokenized US stocks.
Product approvals, investor protections and securities-law requirements still matter.
Wall Street and cryptocurrency exchanges are converging
Coinbase’s strategy reflects a broader transformation in financial markets.
Traditional financial institutions are investing in blockchain infrastructure, while cryptocurrency exchanges are seeking access to equities, derivatives and other mainstream financial products.
WWC ONE MEDIA previously covered the shift in Wall Street Is Putting Stocks on the Blockchain — And These Companies Could Be Sitting on the Biggest Opportunity.
The report examined the emerging competition among crypto platforms, traditional exchanges and infrastructure providers.
Coinbase’s management describes its strategy as building an “Everything Exchange.”
The goal is to provide customers with access to multiple financial products through a single platform.
The opportunity is substantial, but execution will determine whether it produces lasting profitability.
Each new product category brings its own compliance, technology and operating requirements.
Costs remain important as Coinbase diversifies
Coinbase reported adjusted EBITDA of approximately $333 million during the third quarter.
That represented a 60% increase from the second quarter and marked the company’s 15th consecutive quarter of positive adjusted EBITDA.
However, adjusted EBITDA was substantially lower than a year earlier.
The company reduced adjusted operating expenses to approximately $975 million, down 6% quarter over quarter.
Management attributed part of the reduction to lower employee-related expenses and fewer professional-services costs.
Some costs were also shifted from the third quarter into the fourth.
That distinction matters because moving expenditure between quarters does not necessarily produce permanent savings.
Coinbase’s longer-term profitability will depend on generating enough recurring revenue to support its operating structure without relying excessively on crypto investment gains.
Fourth-quarter guidance shows management remains cautious
Coinbase expects fourth-quarter subscription and services revenue of approximately $550 million to $630 million.
The range reflects continuing uncertainty over crypto prices, interest rates, customer balances and demand for its financial products.
The company also reported approximately $165 million in transaction revenue through October 25.
That amount covers only part of the fourth quarter.
It should not be described as the full-quarter outcome or projected forward without considering changes in market activity.
Management lowered its full-year adjusted expense expectations to approximately $4.15 billion–$4.30 billion.
These projections suggest continued emphasis on cost control and diversification.
However, actual results may differ as market conditions change.
Why Coinbase shares fell after the announcement
Despite the reported profit, Coinbase shares declined in after-hours trading following the earnings announcement.
Reuters reported a decline of approximately 3.3% at one point.
Other financial services recorded smaller moves depending on when prices were observed.
Investors appeared concerned about weaker transaction revenue and the significant role of investment gains in reported net income.
Analyst estimates of third-quarter revenue also varied, with some services placing consensus close to the actual result and others showing a modest miss.
It would therefore be inaccurate to claim unanimously that Coinbase either dramatically beat or decisively missed revenue expectations.
The clearer conclusion is that reported profit surprised positively, while underlying trading conditions remained difficult.
What this means for cryptocurrency users in the Philippines
The Philippines has an active community of cryptocurrency investors and digital-asset users.
Coinbase’s results provide insight into the business models of major global exchanges.
But the earnings report does not automatically establish the regulatory availability of every Coinbase product in the Philippines.
Local access can depend on jurisdiction, product type and applicable licensing requirements.
For customers, the company’s shift toward stablecoins and diversified financial services may eventually influence the products available in different markets.
However, financial performance does not eliminate the risks associated with volatile assets, custody arrangements or trading losses.
Users should evaluate the rules and risks of each product rather than assuming a publicly listed exchange guarantees investment returns.
The bigger question: Is Coinbase becoming less dependent on crypto trading?
Coinbase’s latest quarter offers evidence that its business model is changing.
Transaction revenue has declined substantially from a year earlier.
But stablecoin services, subscriptions, derivatives and prediction markets are becoming increasingly important.
The company is also gaining trading market share and expanding tokenized-asset activity.
Those developments could make its earnings less dependent on a single market cycle.
Yet the latest financial results show that the transition remains incomplete.
Reported profit was heavily influenced by gains on crypto investments.
Transaction revenue is still significant.
And the company’s newer businesses must prove they can deliver durable earnings.
Coinbase has returned to profitability with $719 million in reported net income. But after a 35% revenue decline and a $715-million crypto investment gain, the real question is whether its new financial products can generate sustainable growth when the cryptocurrency market is no longer providing an accounting boost.
