LOS ANGELES — The creators of the long-running animated comedy South Park have announced a tongue-in-cheek name change for the show, rebranding it as “South America” in a fresh satirical jab at US President Donald Trump.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced the mock rebrand ahead of the show’s upcoming 29th season, continuing their long tradition of using South Park to target politicians, corporations and pop culture figures.
A Joke About Trump’s Renaming Campaign
The announcement appears to mock Trump’s recent enthusiasm for renaming geographic locations with “America” in their names.
The joke follows the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” for US government purposes and Trump’s more recent push to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
Apple and Google have also reflected some of the naming changes on their mapping services for US users.
In their announcement, Parker and Stone said they were inspired by the “bravery and patriotism” of Apple and Google in changing the name of their own show to “SOUTH AMERICA.”
The creators also took a swipe at their parent company, Paramount, with a sarcastic reference to “a Skydance Capitulation,” an apparent jab connected to Paramount’s corporate changes.
The Timing Is No Accident
The mock name change comes just days before the premiere of South Park’s 29th season.
The series recently won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program, and its creators have continued to use the show and its social media accounts to lampoon Trump and his administration.
The show’s recent storylines have included highly controversial depictions of Trump, including satire involving his relationship with Satan.
The series has never been known for subtlety — and its latest “South America” announcement makes it clear that Parker and Stone have no plans to change that.
Trump Is Far From the First Target
For nearly three decades, South Park has built its reputation on targeting almost everyone.
The show’s creators have mocked political leaders, celebrities, corporations, social trends and entire countries.
Past targets have included Saddam Hussein, Tom Cruise, Canada, weight-loss drugs and popular consumer brands.
But Trump’s presidency has become one of the show’s most frequent sources of material in recent years.
Is ‘South America’ the New Permanent Name?
For now, the name change appears to be a satirical stunt rather than a permanent rebranding.
The announcement is part of the show’s broader tradition of blurring the line between promotion, comedy and political commentary.
Whether the “South America” name will play a larger role in the new season remains to be seen.
The Bottom Line
Trey Parker and Matt Stone have temporarily turned South Park into “South America” — and the joke is aimed squarely at Donald Trump’s renaming campaign.
The satirical rebrand mocks the growing list of geographic names being changed to include “America,” while also taking shots at Apple, Google and Paramount.
For a show that has spent nearly 30 years offending almost everyone, the latest move proves one thing:
When reality starts sounding like satire, South Park is more than ready to rename itself and join the joke.
