SINGAPORE — Singapore is about to become the centre of the competitive Pokémon universe.
The Pokémon World Championships 2027 will take place from August 13 to 15, 2027, marking the first time the annual global tournament will be staged in Singapore. The main event will be held at Singapore EXPO, while Championship Sunday on August 15 will move to the Singapore Indoor Stadium, according to both Channel NewsAsia and an official announcement from The Pokémon Company.
The location was revealed at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco, where The Pokémon Company president and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara said the tournament would return to Asia for the first time since Yokohama, Japan hosted Worlds in 2023.
But Singapore landing Worlds is more than another stop on Pokémon’s global calendar.
It comes at a moment when Pokémon’s presence in Singapore — from competitive tournaments to retail and major public events — is expanding rapidly.
Why Singapore Is a Significant Choice
The Pokémon World Championships is the climax of the annual competitive season, bringing together elite players who have qualified through tournaments around the world.
Singapore EXPO gives organisers considerable room to operate. Singapore Tourism Board describes it as the country’s largest purpose-built MICE venue, with 123,000 sq m of indoor and outdoor event space spread across 10 exhibition halls and 32 meeting rooms. The venue says it can support events ranging from small gatherings to those involving tens of thousands of attendees.
Then comes the biggest visual change of the weekend.
Instead of keeping the entire championship inside the convention venue, the concluding Championship Sunday will take place at Singapore Indoor Stadium, a major sporting and entertainment arena with capacity configurations of up to roughly 12,000 spectators.
That could give Pokémon its own arena-style finale in Singapore, putting the biggest matches on a considerably different stage from the tournament floors where much of the earlier competition takes place.
The approach also follows what Pokémon experimented with in San Francisco in 2026. That year’s Worlds included an expanded Championship Sunday arena experience at Chase Center alongside the inaugural PokémonXP, a broader fan-focused event running with the championships.
However, PokémonXP has not yet been confirmed for Singapore in 2027. The Pokémon Company has so far said only that further details about Worlds will be announced later.
Singapore’s Pokémon Scene Was Already Growing Before Worlds Arrived
The choice of Singapore does not come out of nowhere.
In May 2026, the Singapore Master Ball League recorded 2,661 attendees, according to The Pokémon Company. Of those, 892 competed in the main tournament and another 1,769 took part in public side activities.
Pokémon described it as the highest attendance recorded for a competitive Pokémon event in Singapore, representing a 188 per cent increase from the previous year. Top finishers qualified for the 2026 World Championships in San Francisco.
The competitive pipeline is also being expanded.
The 2026–27 Pokémon Asia Championship Series begins on September 1, 2026 across Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Its Singapore circuit will provide a pathway for players seeking to represent the region at the World Championships.
The Asian series includes competition in the Pokémon Trading Card Game and the Video Game Championships, with VGC now played through Pokémon Champions.
Singapore also has a long-standing physical connection to the franchise through Pokémon Center SINGAPORE at Jewel Changi Airport, which opened in 2019 as the first permanent official Pokémon Center in Asia outside Japan. The store underwent its first major renovation in 2026 and reopened with a Singapore-inspired concept and Solgaleo as its new symbol Pokémon.
All of that means the 2027 championship arrives in a market where Pokémon has already been investing in both its competitive community and its consumer presence.
But the 2027 Tournament Will Be Different
Fans familiar with previous World Championships should expect at least one major competitive change.
Pokémon UNITE will no longer be part of the Pokémon World Championships in 2027.
The Pokémon Company announced in July that UNITE would leave the Championship Series and instead receive a separate in-person competition. The standalone Pokémon UNITE Aeos Crown 2027 is planned for Tokyo.
Pokémon GO is changing too.
For the 2027 World Championships, Pokémon GO competition is set to introduce a 3-on-3 team format, with teams formed from qualified players. The company has said the way individual players from the Asia-Pacific region qualify for Worlds will not change.
And VGC itself has entered a new era.
Pokémon’s competitive video game circuit transitioned to the battle-focused Pokémon Champions platform in 2026. Champions became the official platform for VGC at the 2026 World Championships and will continue as the competitive platform going forward.
That means Singapore will not merely host another edition of an established tournament. It will host a Worlds taking place after several major structural changes to competitive Pokémon.
The Stakes Have Become Much Bigger Than a Weekend Tournament
The size of modern Worlds illustrates how far Pokémon competition has grown.
At the 2026 event in San Francisco, competitors across the championships fought for a combined prize pool exceeding US$2 million, along with World Champion titles and invitations back to the following year’s event.
Singapore’s selection also returns Worlds to Asia after four years.
Yokohama in 2023 was itself historic: Pokémon described it as the first Asian city ever to host the World Championships. The tournament subsequently went to Honolulu in 2024, Anaheim in 2025 and San Francisco in 2026 before the newly announced Singapore edition.
For Southeast Asian players, Singapore dramatically changes the geography of the biggest event on the competitive calendar.
Instead of Worlds taking place thousands of kilometres away in the United States, some of the region’s best players will be fighting for qualification to a world championship being held practically on their doorstep.
And for Singapore, Pokémon Worlds adds another internationally recognised event to a city increasingly positioning its large venues for global sports, entertainment and fan experiences.
What Fans Still Don’t Know
There are several details that Pokémon has not yet announced.
Spectator ticketing and registration arrangements remain unconfirmed. Detailed competition schedules, hall allocations at Singapore EXPO, merchandise arrangements and other fan experiences have also not been released.
Most importantly, there has been no official confirmation that PokémonXP will accompany Worlds in Singapore, despite the inaugural PokémonXP being held alongside the 2026 tournament in San Francisco.
The Pokémon Company says additional information will be released later.
So for now, fans can mark three dates:
August 13–15, 2027. Singapore EXPO. And a Championship Sunday finale at Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The world’s best Pokémon Trainers are coming to Singapore.
The bigger question is whether Worlds itself is about to become something much larger than the tournament Southeast Asian fans have been waiting for.
