SANTA IGNACIA, TARLAC — What could have become a major pawnshop robbery was stopped after a security alarm triggered a rapid police response in Santa Ignacia, Tarlac, leading to the arrest of eight suspected robbers.
The incident happened on Friday, September 4, at an ML Lhuillier pawnshop along Romulo Highway in Barangay Poblacion West, according to the Tarlac Police Provincial Office (TPPO). Police said the suspects allegedly attempted to enter the establishment at around 10:30 a.m.
The break-in apparently did not go as planned.
The TPPO Tactical Operations Center received a 911 call reporting that the pawnshop’s alarm system had been activated. When responding officers arrived, they discovered a small opening in the floor near the establishment’s roll-up door.
Investigators believed the opening had been created by the suspects as part of their attempt to gain access to the pawnshop.
Suspects allegedly used drainage canal
Police said the group apparently used the drainage canal along Romulo Highway as a passageway, bringing tools with them to create an opening into the establishment.
A hot-pursuit operation was immediately launched.
Officers eventually arrested five men who were allegedly attempting to flee through the same drainage canal in Barangay Poblacion West.
Authorities said they recovered several items from the five suspects, including an improvised firearm, two hand grenades, a pressure jack, a hacksaw, two crowbars, a metal chisel and five sachets of suspected shabu.
The recovery of explosives and a suspected illegal firearm added another serious dimension to the attempted break-in.
Three more suspects arrested
The investigation did not end with the first five arrests.
According to police, the apprehended suspects identified three other alleged companions who were waiting along Romulo Highway in Barangay Poblacion East.
The three were reportedly aboard an Elf truck.
A follow-up police operation subsequently resulted in their arrest.
Police also recovered the vehicle along with another hand grenade, three sachets of suspected shabu and a rifle grenade, according to the TPPO account reported by Inquirer.
Quick response credited for foiling alleged robbery
Tarlac Police Provincial Office director Col. Harry Lorenzo III credited the rapid response of police officers for preventing the suspected robbery from being completed.
He also commended the citizen who reported the activated alarm.
The incident underscores the importance of alarm systems and immediate reporting, particularly when suspicious activity is detected around commercial establishments.
The eight individuals are being described by authorities as suspects, and allegations against them remain subject to investigation and the judicial process.

The arrests also come as police units across Central Luzon continue intensified law-enforcement and manhunt operations. For the Santa Ignacia case, however, authorities have yet to publicly disclose further details about the suspects’ identities, the alleged group’s background, the intended target or the possible value of property they may have been attempting to steal.
What remains unanswered is how much more police may uncover about the group—and whether the attempted pawnshop break-in was an isolated operation or part of a wider criminal activity.
