A 73-year-old man who died after being stabbed in Telok Blangah Heights has been remembered by local residents and a coffee shop vendor as a friendly regular who often visited the area with his wife.
The elderly man was among two people injured in an incident near Block 61 Telok Blangah Heights on Monday evening (Oct. 5). He was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries.
A 32-year-old man has been arrested and is due to be charged with murder on Wednesday (Oct. 7). Police said he is believed to have acted alone and that there is currently no evidence to suggest the incident was religiously motivated or an act of terror.
Victim Ran Towards Coffee Shop for Help
The incident happened at around 6pm.
According to eyewitness accounts reported by local media, the 73-year-old and the other injured man, aged 53, ran towards the coffee shop at Block 61 after being injured.
A vendor told Shin Min Daily News that both men appeared to be covered in blood as they approached the coffee shop from the direction of Block 56.
The older man had suffered a serious injury to his chest and was bleeding heavily.
People at the coffee shop immediately called for emergency assistance and attempted to help the injured man while waiting for paramedics.
Members of the public reportedly applied pressure to his wound in an effort to control the bleeding.
He was eventually placed on a chair, but witnesses said his condition deteriorated and he became confused before losing consciousness.
Nearby Doctor Rushed to Help
The commotion also reached a medical clinic located beside the coffee shop.
Dr Joel Lee, 34, of The Local Doctor Clinic, told The Straits Times that he was seeing a patient when a staff member alerted him that someone was bleeding outside.
When he went out, he saw the elderly victim in serious condition.
Lee said someone was already holding the man’s chest and that the victim’s hands had become limp.
The doctor attended to him and alerted the paramedics that the elderly man needed urgent medical attention.
The victim was conscious enough to indicate that he was in distress, but his condition was extremely serious.
The 53-year-old injured man had also made his way to the clinic seeking assistance. He was conscious and able to move and speak when medical help arrived.
Both men were subsequently taken to Singapore General Hospital.
Police later confirmed that the 73-year-old died in hospital, while the 53-year-old was conscious when conveyed to hospital.
‘Friendly’ Regular at the Coffee Shop
The elderly victim was described by people familiar with him as a quiet and friendly person.
A coffee shop vendor told Shin Min Daily News that the man lived nearby and frequently visited the coffee shop with his wife.
He reportedly came almost every day, usually sitting with his wife to have a meal.
The vendor said the man had never caused trouble and was regarded as a familiar face in the neighbourhood.
Another resident told local media that a friend had seen the elderly man sitting near a mailbox in the area before the incident, although the circumstances leading up to the stabbing were not known.
The descriptions painted a picture of an older resident who was familiar to people in the neighbourhood, making the fatal incident particularly distressing for those who had encountered him regularly.
Second Man Remains in Hospital
The other victim, aged 53, was also injured during the incident.
According to accounts from the scene, he had a significant bloodstain around his left shoulder.
Dr Lee said the younger injured man was able to walk and communicate while waiting for an ambulance, and his bleeding appeared to have been brought under control.
Police confirmed that he was conscious when taken to hospital.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed the full extent of his injuries or his current condition.
32-Year-Old Suspect Surrendered to Police
A 32-year-old man was subsequently arrested in the vicinity.
Police said the man had called them to surrender after the incident.
He is believed to have acted alone.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 7, where he will be charged with murder under Section 302(1) of the Penal Code 1871.
The offence carries the death penalty upon conviction.
The murder charge is an allegation at this stage, and the accused remains entitled to due process.
Police investigations are continuing, and authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive.
No Evidence of Terrorism or Religious Motive
Given the seriousness of the incident, police specifically stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest that the attack was religiously motivated or an act of terror.
Police also said the suspect is believed to have acted alone.
Authorities have not released the identities of the three men involved.
The exact circumstances surrounding the encounter, including what led to the alleged stabbing and the relationship, if any, between the men, remain under investigation.
Police Cordoned Off Area
The scene around the coffee shop and nearby blocks was cordoned off as officers investigated.
Bloodstains were visible in parts of the area, while police officers and forensic personnel examined locations believed to be connected to the incident.
A trail of blood was also reported around the void deck and towards nearby areas.
The presence of emergency responders and police drew attention from residents, with the area remaining an active crime scene for several hours.
Authorities have urged members of the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the case while investigations are ongoing.
Neighbours Asked to Respect Family’s Privacy
Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Rachel Ong said she met the victim’s family following the incident.
In a Facebook post, she said the family was still trying to come to terms with what had happened and had asked for privacy during the difficult period.
Ong also urged members of the public not to spread unverified information or share photographs and identifying details of the victim.
The incident has left residents in the neighbourhood shaken, particularly those who knew the elderly man as a familiar presence at the nearby coffee shop.
As investigators continue to piece together what happened on Monday evening, the 73-year-old’s family is now mourning his death while the 32-year-old suspect prepares to face a murder charge in court.
