Singapore and Brunei have signed a new agreement to strengthen cooperation in maritime and port development, expanding collaboration between the two countries’ maritime authorities.
The memorandum of understanding was signed on Sept. 29 by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore Chief Executive Ang Wee Keong and Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam Chief Executive Captain (Ret.) Zil Husam Haji Abdul Rahman. The signing took place on the sidelines of the 12th Singapore-Brunei Young Leaders’ Programme.
Under the agreement, the two authorities will work more closely in areas including maritime digitalisation, maritime safety, port State control inspections, incident investigations and professional training.
The cooperation is intended to support safer, cleaner and more efficient shipping while allowing officials from both sides to exchange technical knowledge, operational experience and best practices.
Ang said the memorandum builds on the longstanding partnership between Singapore and Brunei, while Zil Husam said the agreement would create more opportunities for officers from both agencies to work together on practical maritime and port initiatives.
The agreement comes as Singapore and Brunei continue to deepen their broader bilateral relationship. Brunei Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah visited Singapore for the five-day Young Leaders’ Programme, where he met Singaporean leaders and discussed further cooperation in areas of shared interest.
For the maritime sector, the new framework provides a basis for continued exchanges between the two authorities as both countries seek to strengthen port operations, safety standards, digital capabilities and the wider efficiency of shipping activities.
