TAIPEI — Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is preparing for a major holiday travel surge, with an estimated 930,000 passengers expected to pass through the airport from September 24 to 29 as the Mid-Autumn Festival and Teachers’ Day create an extended travel period.
The forecast works out to roughly 155,000 passengers a day, according to airport authorities cited by Taiwan News and United Daily News. The busiest days are expected to be September 24 and 25, when passenger numbers could exceed 160,000 per day.
The actual four-day holiday runs from Friday’s Mid-Autumn Festival through Monday’s Teachers’ Day, but the surrounding days are expected to add to the airport’s overall traffic.
Airport Urges Travelers to Arrive Early
With passenger volumes expected to climb sharply, the airport operator is advising travelers to arrive about three hours before their scheduled departure and make use of available digital and automated services to help reduce congestion.
The expected surge is also prompting increased security preparations.
Taiwan’s Aviation Police Bureau is deploying 160 additional police officers, along with 26 personnel performing alternative military service, to support security inspections and passenger movement during the busy period.
Security Checks Target Restricted Items
Authorities are also reminding passengers to pay close attention to aviation-security rules.
Items such as lighters, vaping devices and power banks require particular attention when packing. Taiwan News, citing airport security guidance, reported that authorities discover an average of approximately 18,000 prohibited items each month during inspections.
Passengers should check the latest airline and airport requirements before traveling because restrictions can differ depending on the item and whether it is placed in checked or carry-on baggage.
Holiday Travel Could Put Pressure on Passenger Flow
The latest forecast comes as Taiwan prepares for one of its major traditional holiday periods, when people commonly travel domestically and internationally to reunite with family or take short vacations.
Taoyuan International Airport has also been expanding digital and automated services as it handles growing passenger volumes. The airport previously introduced additional initiatives aimed at improving the travel experience, including expanded facilities and services for travelers.
The airport’s current priority is keeping passengers moving efficiently while maintaining security as traffic approaches the projected 930,000-person total.
For travelers flying during the peak period, the message from authorities is straightforward: arrive early, check baggage restrictions in advance and allow extra time for security procedures.
With hundreds of thousands of passengers expected within just six days, the holiday rush could put Taiwan’s busiest international gateway under significant pressure — particularly during the Thursday and Friday peaks.
