Reddit has been granted an extension to establish a local presence in the Philippines after committing to work directly with authorities on online child safety, harmful content and other cybercrime concerns.
The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center initially gave Reddit and Discord 24 hours to designate a resident agent or local representative or establish an office in the country. The directive came amid heightened scrutiny of online platforms following several school-related violence incidents, including the September 18 shooting at Banga National High School in South Cotabato.
Unlike Discord, Reddit responded within the original deadline and met with CICC officials online. The agency subsequently allowed Reddit additional time to carry out its commitments, while clarifying that the extension does not apply to Discord.
Reddit has committed to establishing an office and a team in the Philippines that will coordinate with the CICC. The platform also discussed creating so-called “green lanes,” or direct channels that would allow Philippine authorities to flag potentially harmful material for expedited review and possible removal.
The proposed channels would cover concerns including online sexual abuse and exploitation of children, child sexual abuse and exploitation material, scams, misinformation, harmful content and material linked to nihilistic violent extremism. Reddit has not, however, provided a specific timetable for establishing the office or implementing the new coordination mechanisms.
CICC Executive Director Undersecretary Renato Paraiso said the agency was seeking accountability and a clear mechanism for government coordination rather than asking platforms to police the internet. The agency has emphasized that authorities need to be able to reach platforms quickly when online activity presents risks to Filipino children or communities.
The government’s push is also taking place alongside separate privacy enforcement. The National Privacy Commission has issued show-cause orders involving Reddit and other major digital platforms over compliance with Philippine data-privacy requirements.
Discord, meanwhile, had offered to brief the CICC on its existing safeguards, including its Global Teen Experience, age-assurance measures, Family Center tools and law-enforcement request system. The CICC said those measures did not by themselves satisfy its demand for concrete commitments, and the agency later clarified that Discord had not received the same extension granted to Reddit.
The developments mark a significant shift in how Philippine authorities are seeking accountability from global online platforms. For Reddit, the next phase will involve turning its commitment into an actual local presence and faster response system, while regulators will be watching whether those measures provide the level of cooperation they are seeking.
