Carl the Jeweller and Tatler Philippines brought together jewellery enthusiasts and guests for “Cocktails & Colour,” an intimate gathering exploring the history, significance and enduring appeal of coloured gemstones.
The evening showcased an array of fine jewellery featuring emeralds, rubies and sapphires, with rings, necklaces and bracelets displayed for guests to examine up close. Music by DJ Carlos del Prado, illustrations by Pete Rich, cocktails and canapés added to the event’s artistic and social atmosphere.
Carl Fider, founder of Carl the Jeweller and Tessera Jewelry, opened the discussion by emphasizing that a gemstone’s appeal goes beyond conventional measurements such as rarity, origin, quality and certification. For him, the most exceptional stones are those capable of creating an emotional response even before their technical qualities are fully understood.
The event also featured Stephen Andarakis, laboratory director of the International Gemological Institute, who travelled from Hong Kong to discuss the distinctive world of coloured gemstones.
Much of the discussion focused on emeralds, including their geological formation and long association with royalty and prestige. Andarakis explained that emerald is a variety of beryl, the same mineral family that includes aquamarine and morganite, with trace elements such as chromium and vanadium responsible for its characteristic green colour.
While diamonds are commonly assessed through the four Cs—cut, clarity, colour and carat—the discussion highlighted how colour plays a particularly important role when evaluating coloured gemstones. Origin and treatment are also significant considerations, with Colombia and Zambia identified during the presentation as important sources of high-quality emeralds.
Gemstone treatments were also discussed. Rather than automatically indicating a flaw, treatment can be used to enhance colour or improve clarity. Emeralds, in particular, commonly contain inclusions and fissures that can reach the surface, making treatment an established part of their preparation and presentation.
Beyond the technical discussion, the gathering offered guests an opportunity to appreciate jewellery from a more personal perspective—not simply through grading, numbers or valuation, but through the craftsmanship, colour and character of each stone.
