Republican Senator John Curtis of Utah has called for a Senate investigation into Donald Trump Jr.’s business dealings and relationships with foreign individuals following reports that a Russian businessman with close ties to President Vladimir Putin helped pay for celebrations surrounding Trump Jr.’s wedding.
In a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Curtis urged lawmakers to subpoena Trump Jr. over his business activities, relationships with foreign individuals and entities, gifts or other benefits he has received, and situations in which his relationship with his father, President Donald Trump, may have been used to provide value. Curtis said the same standard should apply regardless of whether the president is a Republican or Democrat.
The request follows reporting that Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman and president of the International Boxing Association, helped finance portions of Trump Jr.’s wedding celebrations in the Bahamas in May. Reports said the spending included the rental of a private island and a fireworks display, with the costs reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Trump, acknowledged Kremlev’s involvement, describing him as a friend who had hosted two nights of celebrations as a wedding gift. They said they were grateful for the gesture and did not characterize it as politically motivated.
President Trump, who did not attend the wedding, has also defended the arrangement while distinguishing the celebrations Kremlev funded from the wedding ceremony itself. He said he did not know Kremlev and later indicated that his son planned to reimburse the Russian businessman for the expenses.
Kremlev is a prominent Russian sports official who heads the International Boxing Association and has been described in reporting as having close ties to Putin. The IBA has received significant funding from Russia’s state-owned Gazprom, while the organisation has faced scrutiny from international sporting authorities over governance and financial transparency.
Curtis said the Senate should examine whether Trump Jr.’s proximity to the presidency has provided financial value to his business interests or relationships. He also pointed to the extensive congressional scrutiny previously directed at Hunter Biden, arguing that lawmakers should apply comparable standards when examining the family of a Republican president.
The senator’s request comes after Democratic lawmakers separately began examining the wedding payments. House Oversight Committee Democrat Robert Garcia requested records from Trump Jr. and the White House concerning his relationship with Kremlev, including communications and financial records relating to purchases made for the wedding by foreign nationals.
The Senate Judiciary Committee has received Curtis’ request, but it remains to be seen whether lawmakers will open a formal investigation or compel Trump Jr. to testify or provide documents.
The controversy has therefore moved beyond questions about a lavish wedding gift and into a broader congressional debate over foreign financial relationships, presidential family business dealings and the standards lawmakers should apply when examining potential conflicts of interest.
