What started as a childhood hobby has turned into a professional career for Cho Young-gwang, a 20-year-old South Korean game developer better known online as Gold Octopus.
Cho began creating games on Roblox while still in middle school, teaching himself game development as the platform grew. Years later, his work has turned that early interest into an income of more than 100 million won a year, according to a report by Hankook Ilbo published by The Korea Times.
From Playing Games to Building Them
Unlike the typical path into the gaming industry, Cho learned largely through self-directed practice rather than attending college.
His breakthrough came with “Sol’s RNG,” a Roblox experience that he co-created. The game eventually ranked among the platform’s top 20 titles out of roughly 3 million games, according to the report.
His work was also recognized at the 2024 Roblox Korea Community Awards, where Gold Octopus won Best Experience of the Year and Outstanding Creator of the Year.
His growing reputation eventually took him beyond game development itself. After attending the Roblox Developers Conference in 2024 and 2025, Cho appeared as a featured speaker at the 2026 conference in San Jose, California.
A Six-Figure Career Without a Traditional College Route
Cho’s story illustrates the expanding creator economy surrounding Roblox, where users can move from playing games to designing, programming and monetizing their own experiences.
According to The Korea Times, Cho also taught himself Japanese and has begun collaborating with a Japanese company, expanding his work beyond South Korea.
But the success of creators like Cho does not mean professional game development is easy money.
Yoon Young-geun, CEO of Korean user-generated-content studio Versework, told Hankook Ilbo that some creators affiliated with the studio earn around 2 billion won annually. However, such earnings represent the high end of a highly competitive creator economy rather than a typical outcome.
The Hidden Work Behind Roblox Success
Behind the eye-catching earnings is a demanding development cycle.
Yoon said Roblox creators often have to continually update their games to keep players engaged. The pressure to release improvements regularly can make the career difficult to sustain, with some developers leaving after an unsuccessful project.
The report pointed to “Grow a Garden” as an example of persistence: its developer reportedly released dozens of projects over many years before creating a title that became a major hit.
That means Roblox success is not simply about having a popular idea. Developers also need programming skills, creativity, persistence and an understanding of what keeps players returning.
Roblox Opens the Door to a New Generation of Creators
Roblox has increasingly positioned itself as more than a gaming platform. Its huge user base has created an ecosystem where players can also become creators, developers and entrepreneurs.
The company reported approximately 144 million daily active users in March, highlighting the scale of the potential audience for user-created experiences.
Roblox has also introduced Build, a mobile-focused AI creation feature designed to make basic game creation more accessible by allowing users to generate game elements through prompts.
That could lower some of the technical barriers for aspiring creators, although turning a basic game into a sustainable business remains a much bigger challenge.
A New Kind of Career Path
Cho’s journey reflects a broader shift in how young creators can develop digital careers.
Instead of starting with a traditional degree or entering a major game studio, he began with a platform familiar to millions of young players and gradually developed the technical skills needed to build his own experiences.
His story also comes with an important reality check: successful Roblox developers are still a small portion of the platform’s enormous creator community.
For Gold Octopus, however, the journey has already transformed something that began as a childhood pastime into a professional career—and put his work on an international stage.
What started with playing Roblox eventually became something much bigger: building the games other people play.
