TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwanese television personality and former professional basketball player Blackie Chen (陳建州) was hospitalized in Taipei on September 15 after suffering an acute myocardial infarction, with his management and Taiwan’s P. League+ (PLG) confirming that he underwent emergency surgery and is recovering under medical care.
Chen, 49, reportedly became unwell while attending a PLG basketball game. Taiwan media reported that he experienced chest discomfort and subsequently went to National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH), where doctors diagnosed an acute heart attack and performed emergency surgery.
Chen Undergoes Emergency Surgery
According to reports, Chen’s condition was stabilized following the procedure. Taiwan’s PLG said he was receiving professional medical care at NTUH and was recovering.
The Straits Times, citing Taiwanese media, reported that Chen underwent a heart-stent procedure after an artery was found to be severely blocked. His wife, singer Christine Fan (范瑋琪), was reported to have gone to the hospital after learning of the incident.
NTUH itself has declined to provide details because of patient privacy, according to United Daily News.
Blackie Chen Reassures Fans
Chen later posted a message on social media thanking people for their concern and saying he would take care of himself and focus on recovery. Taiwan sports media reported that he also thanked the medical team, family and friends for their support.
His hospitalization comes as Chen remains active in Taiwan basketball. He serves as a vice chairman of the P. League+, and has continued attending basketball events and supporting the sport.
Reports Say His Condition Is Improving
Multiple Taiwanese outlets reported that Chen’s recovery was progressing after the emergency procedure. His management said he was receiving treatment and resting, while friends and colleagues have publicly expressed concern and support.
Reports about the incident have also prompted wider discussion in Taiwan about recognizing warning signs of heart problems. However, individual medical circumstances vary, and Chen’s case should not be used to draw conclusions about the health of other people.
For now, Chen remains under medical observation as he recovers from the sudden cardiac emergency.
