Gold prices could come under renewed pressure if the US Federal Reserve raises interest rates this week, as higher borrowing costs and bond yields can reduce the appeal of the non-interest-bearing precious metal.
Markets are increasingly expecting the Fed to increase its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage point at its September meeting. The prospect of tighter monetary policy has already contributed to weakness in global gold prices.
Gold has also been affected by movements in the US dollar and Treasury yields. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies, while higher yields can encourage investors to shift money towards interest-bearing assets.
Spot gold fell to around US$4,293 an ounce on Sept 15, while US gold futures settled about 0.4% lower at roughly US$4,333 an ounce. The decline came as oil prices rose and concerns about inflation strengthened expectations for higher US interest rates.
Analysts have warned that gold could face additional downside if the Federal Reserve signals that interest rates will remain elevated for longer. Higher rates increase the opportunity cost of holding gold because the metal does not generate interest income.
However, the outlook remains dependent on the Fed’s policy guidance and developments in financial markets. Some of the expected rate increase may already be reflected in gold prices, meaning the central bank’s comments about future policy could be as important as the decision itself.
Rising oil prices are another factor being closely watched. Higher energy costs can increase inflationary pressure, potentially encouraging central banks to maintain tighter monetary policies for longer.
Gold nevertheless continues to attract demand as a traditional hedge against economic and geopolitical uncertainty. Ongoing tensions and concerns about global economic conditions could limit the extent of any decline if investors continue to seek defensive assets.
For Thai investors, movements in international gold prices, the US dollar and the baht will all influence domestic gold prices. The local market could therefore experience further volatility as investors respond to the Federal Reserve’s decision and its guidance on future interest rates.
The Fed’s September meeting is expected to provide an important signal for the direction of global financial markets, with gold traders watching closely for indications of whether monetary policy will become more restrictive in the months ahead.
