Train services across large parts of the Netherlands were severely disrupted on Tuesday morning (Sept 15) after railway authorities discovered materials deliberately placed on tracks at multiple locations.
Infrastructure operator ProRail said the objects caused failures in the railway signalling system, making it impossible for trains to safely operate on affected sections of track.
The disruption began around 5.30am and affected at least 20 locations initially, with later reports putting the number of affected sites at around 30. The central and eastern parts of the country were hit particularly hard, while some services in western areas were also disrupted.
Major disruption was reported around Zwolle, Deventer and Amersfoort during the morning rush hour, affecting thousands of commuters.
ProRail said the materials interfered with track-circuit systems that determine whether a section of railway is occupied. When the system detected the objects, signals were automatically turned red, preventing trains from passing.
At least one train reportedly struck one of the objects, but no injuries were reported.
Police launched an investigation into the suspected sabotage, but authorities had not identified any suspects or a motive. No group had claimed responsibility.
The disruption came as the Netherlands marked Prinsjesdag, the annual opening of parliament when the government presents its budget and policy plans. The occasion draws large crowds to The Hague, where King Willem-Alexander traditionally travels through the city in a horse-drawn carriage before delivering the government’s programme.
Rail workers removed the objects and treated them as potential evidence. Train services gradually resumed later in the day as affected tracks were cleared, although passengers continued to face delays and disruptions.
Authorities are continuing to investigate who placed the materials on the tracks and why.
