MANILA, Philippines — Cebu Pacific passengers will soon be able to pack three kilograms more into their cabin baggage without paying for additional checked luggage, but travelers will need to check one important detail on their tickets before heading to the airport.
Starting September 15, 2026, Cebu Pacific will increase its free hand-carry baggage allowance from 7 kilograms to 10 kilograms per passenger on flights operating under the airline’s 5J code.
The new allowance covers one cabin bag for the overhead compartment plus one smaller personal item that can fit beneath the seat, subject to the airline’s size restrictions. Cebu Pacific has also confirmed that the increased weight limit will apply regardless of when the passenger booked the flight.
That means a passenger who bought a ticket months ago for a 5J flight departing September 15 or later should still qualify for the new 10kg allowance.
But there is an important exception.
Cebgo flights are staying at 7kg
The higher allowance does not extend to flights carrying the DG code operated by Cebgo, Cebu Pacific’s regional affiliate.
Cebu Pacific said in responses through its verified social media account that Cebgo passengers will continue to be limited to 7kg of hand-carried baggage. The distinction is particularly important for travelers using regional routes or itineraries containing both 5J and DG flight segments.
For passengers with connecting flights, that could mean being allowed 10kg on a Cebu Pacific 5J sector but having to comply with the lower 7kg allowance when transferring to a DG-operated flight.
The safest rule is simple: check the flight number printed on the itinerary rather than assuming every flight sold within the Cebu Pacific network automatically receives the new allowance.
What changes — and what does not
The biggest change is the weight ceiling.
Passengers on eligible 5J flights gain an additional 3kg of free cabin baggage, potentially making it easier for short-trip travelers to fly without purchasing checked baggage.
The size restriction for the main cabin bag remains up to 56cm x 36cm x 23cm, according to Cebu Pacific baggage guidance. Passengers are still limited to a cabin bag plus a smaller personal item, and baggage exceeding the permitted dimensions, number of pieces or applicable weight limit may still be subject to gate baggage charges.
Cebu Pacific has said the change is intended to help improve boarding efficiency and provide more consistent enforcement of hand-carry rules across its network.
The extra three kilograms does not mean travelers can bring a larger suitcase aboard. Oversized luggage can still be required to be checked in even when its total weight remains below 10kg.
Cebu Pacific moves above rivals’ standard free allowance
The change also gives Cebu Pacific a larger standard free cabin-baggage weight allowance than two of its major competitors in the Philippine market.
Philippine Airlines currently permits one standard carry-on bag weighing up to 7kg, while AirAsia Philippines likewise provides a standard free cabin allowance of up to 7kg for a cabin bag and personal item combined.
AirAsia does offer a paid Xtra Carry-On option that can raise its cabin baggage allowance to 14kg, but its standard complimentary allowance remains 7kg.
For Cebu Pacific, increasing the standard free allowance to 10kg could prove particularly attractive to passengers taking short domestic trips, business travelers carrying laptops and electronics, and tourists trying to avoid checked-baggage fees.
It could also change the calculations for budget-conscious travelers who routinely pack close to the previous 7kg threshold.
Why passengers should still check before flying
There is one wrinkle travelers should be aware of.
As of September 12, Cebu Pacific’s general online baggage guidance still displays the existing 7kg hand-carry limit, even though the airline has publicly confirmed that the limit will rise to 10kg on eligible 5J flights starting September 15.
Independent reports from Philstar, PhilSTAR Life and Gulf News have also reported the September 15 implementation date and the continued 7kg restriction for Cebgo flights.
Travelers departing before September 15 remain subject to the existing 7kg allowance. Cebu Pacific specifically clarified that flights leaving before the implementation date will continue under the old limit.
Passengers should therefore check both their departure date and flight code before packing.
A small baggage change with a big impact
Three additional kilograms may not sound dramatic, but for travelers accustomed to carefully weighing laptops, clothes, chargers and pasalubong before a Cebu Pacific flight, it represents a 43% increase over the previous 7kg cabin-weight limit.
For many short-haul passengers, that could be enough to eliminate the need for checked luggage altogether.
The biggest catch is that the change is not universal across the Cebu Pacific group.
Beginning September 15, the number passengers need to remember will depend on the letters printed beside their flight: 5J means up to 10kg; DG remains at 7kg.
And for travelers moving between the two, those two letters could determine whether their bag flies with them in the cabin — or ends up costing more at the gate.
