SINGAPORE, Sept. 12, 2026 — Singapore’s MRT network has reached its highest reliability level on record, with trains on the five mature lines averaging 2.88 million train-km between delays lasting more than five minutes in the 12 months through August.
That figure rose sharply from 2.37 million train-km in July, surpassing the previous record of 2.627 million set in June 2024. It also means the network has remained above two million train-km for five consecutive months.
But beneath the record-breaking headline is an important detail for commuters: while serious breakdowns have become increasingly rare, punctuality and scheduled-service delivery actually slipped slightly in August.
That makes Singapore’s latest rail report less a simple victory lap than a snapshot of a network trying to balance reliability, ageing infrastructure, major renewal work and continued expansion.
10 Months Without a Major MRT Delay
Perhaps the strongest number in the latest Land Transport Authority report is not the 2.88 million MKBF figure at all.
Singapore’s five mature MRT lines went through August without any disruption lasting more than 30 minutes, extending the streak to 10 consecutive months.
That is the longest period without such a major MRT delay since LTA began tracking the statistic in 2011.
The achievement is particularly notable after Singapore experienced a cluster of rail disruptions in 2025.
An official Rail Reliability Taskforce later examined 15 incidents between July and September 2025, involving problems ranging from signalling and power systems to trains themselves. The taskforce said the underlying causes were different and unrelated but identified areas where the network could become more resilient.
Downtown Line Emerges as the Standout Performer
All five mature MRT lines either maintained or improved their reliability in August.
The biggest jump came from the Downtown Line, whose 12-month MKBF almost doubled from 4.20 million train-km in July to 8.37 million in August, making it the strongest-performing mature MRT line.
The North East Line followed at 4.48 million train-km, while the East-West Line improved from 2.02 million to 2.52 million. The Circle Line edged higher to 2.51 million, while the North-South Line remained unchanged at 1.65 million train-km.
The 2.88 million network-wide figure is also nearly three times LTA’s long-standing target of one million train-km between failures, a target Singapore first achieved in 2019.
But There Is a Catch With the Record Number
MKBF — Mean Kilometres Between Failure — measures how far trains travel, on average, before experiencing a delay of more than five minutes.
It is a useful reliability indicator, but LTA itself has previously warned against reading too much into very high MKBF figures.
The authority said in 2025 that once a line is above one million train-km, the metric becomes highly sensitive to even a small change in the number of delays. LTA gave the Downtown Line as an example: one additional disruption can dramatically alter its 12-month figure.
In other words, 8.37 million does not necessarily mean the Downtown Line is “five times better” for commuters than a line at 1.65 million.
It means qualifying faults have become exceptionally infrequent.
That distinction matters.
Two Commuter-Focused Measures Actually Fell
LTA now publishes other measurements because MKBF alone cannot capture the full passenger experience.
Train Service Delivery, which compares the distance trains actually operated with the distance they were scheduled to operate, slipped from 99.71 per cent in July to 99.62 per cent in August.
Train punctuality, measuring trips completed within two minutes of schedule at the end of a line, declined from 99.29 per cent to 99.03 per cent.
The Straits Times reported that planned system-integration testing contributed to weaker service-delivery and punctuality figures on the Downtown Line.
Those percentages remain extremely high. But they show why a record MKBF does not automatically mean every commuter experienced a faster or more punctual journey during the month.
The Thomson-East Coast Line Is Improving — But Still Reported Separately
There is another major qualification to the headline number.
The Thomson-East Coast Line is excluded from the overall 2.88 million train-km MRT figure.
TEL’s own MKBF improved from 373,000 train-km in July to 415,000 in August, but LTA says comparisons with mature lines are not yet straightforward because the newer line is still undergoing construction, extension and system-integration work while carrying passengers.
The final TEL stage, including Bedok South and Sungei Bedok stations, is expected to open later in 2026, after which LTA expects operations to have more time to stabilise.
New lines also run lower total mileage than mature systems, which can make MKBF figures more volatile.
What Changed After Singapore’s 2025 Rail Disruptions?
LTA says the stronger performance over the past five months reflects both the work of rail employees and operators and measures flowing from the Rail Reliability Taskforce recommendations issued in February 2026.
Those recommendations go far beyond fixing individual faults.
LTA, SMRT and SBS Transit are working on stronger backup power systems, faster procedures for dealing with signalling failures, improved train-rescue arrangements, bigger inventories of critical spare parts and accelerated renewal of trains, signalling and power infrastructure.
The plans also call for more condition monitoring, better sharing of engineering data across operators, predictive maintenance and greater use of automation and robotics.
Some of those upgrades may come with a trade-off for passengers: LTA has said more engineering hours — including longer service closures where necessary — may be required to renew ageing equipment more quickly.
Why the Next Phase Could Be Harder Than Setting the Record
Singapore’s problem is increasingly not how to rescue an unreliable MRT system.
It is how to prevent an already highly reliable system from deteriorating.
Parts of the network are now more than 40 years old, while new lines and technology are simultaneously being added. The Rail Reliability Taskforce has warned that integrating newer systems with ageing infrastructure makes sustaining current performance increasingly challenging.
That is why the August record may ultimately be most important not as a finish line, but as a benchmark.
The mature MRT network has now gone 10 months without a major delay and is operating far above its official reliability target.
The harder question is whether Singapore can keep those numbers at record levels while renewing some of its oldest rail infrastructure — without commuters paying for that success through longer maintenance closures, reduced operating hours or less consistent punctuality.
