A deeply emotional moment during a Catholic Mass in Minnesota has gone viral after a priest was seen crying uncontrollably and struggling to raise the chalice during the consecration.
The September 14, 2026, Mass at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church in Hopkins was being celebrated by Father Brent Bowman, chaplain of Chesterton Academy, during the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
What viewers saw was striking: as Bowman prayed the Eucharistic Prayer over the wine, he became visibly overwhelmed. His voice faltered, he began to weep and, at one point, he was unable to lift the chalice above the altar.

He said that while speaking the consecration prayers, he felt an overwhelming awareness of what he described as the power of the words being spoken and the presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
Bowman said the experience became so intense that he struggled to speak.
He also described experiencing what he perceived as the “weight” of God’s power and the presence of Christ in the chalice.
According to his account, the chalice eventually felt too heavy to hold, forcing him to place it back on the altar. He continued to cry for more than a minute before eventually continuing with the Eucharistic Prayer.
