Design Miami Seoul Draws More Than 12,000 Visitors as Collectible Design Sales Surge

Design Miami Seoul 2026 has attracted more than 12,000 visitors and generated a flurry of sales, signaling growing demand for collectible design in South Korea and across Asia.

The seven-day fair, held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) from August 31 to September 6, marked the second edition of Design Miami’s Seoul event and expanded significantly from its inaugural 2025 edition. According to the Seoul Design Foundation, approximately 12,000 people attended, including more than 3,000 guests during the opening-day programs.

The event also moved beyond being primarily an exhibition of Korean designers, introducing a dedicated Gallery Program designed to connect international galleries, designers, collectors and buyers in Seoul.

More than 50 works sold

The commercial results were among the most closely watched developments of this year’s fair.

Yonhap, citing the Seoul Design Foundation, reported that more than 50 works were sold during the event. That included roughly 35 of the 92 works presented through the Gallery Program, alongside around 15 works by Korean and other Asian designers. Some participating galleries reportedly sold all of their displayed works.

The foundation said discussions over additional purchases and collaborations were continuing after the fair, suggesting that transactions were not limited to deals completed during the seven-day event.

From design showcase to international marketplace

The 2026 edition represented an important expansion for Design Miami Seoul.

The fair featured six international galleries from countries including the United States, United Kingdom and Spain, while more than 100 designers participated across the event’s programs. About 230 works were presented, according to Yonhap.

Design Miami itself described the second Seoul edition as an expansion of its footprint and programming, combining galleries, partner exhibitions and its In Situ program. The organization has positioned Seoul as a long-term part of its international calendar rather than a one-off Asian event.

The 2026 theme, “Resonance: Design in Dialogue,” explored connections between traditional craftsmanship, contemporary design, materials and cultural exchange.

Korean craftsmanship meets global design

A major feature of the Seoul fair was the meeting of traditional Korean techniques with contemporary materials and technology.

The expanded In Situ program presented works from 36 designers and studios from Korea, Taiwan and Japan. The pieces ranged from furniture, lighting and ceramics to sculptural works incorporating materials and techniques such as hanji, mother-of-pearl, natural lacquer, carbon fiber and 3D printing.

One example came from Korean design studio LEJE, whose work combines 3D-printed structures with mother-of-pearl and natural lacquer. Individual pieces can require hundreds of hours of hand-finishing.

Samsung Electronics also participated with an exhibition featuring 14 Korean artists, pairing their interpretations with custom frames around Samsung OLED televisions.

Seoul’s collectible-design market gains momentum

The results arrive as Seoul continues expanding its position as an international destination for art, design and cultural events.

Design Miami Seoul took place alongside Seoul’s wider art-week activity, including major art fairs, while the partnership between Design Miami and the Seoul Design Foundation has been extended for continued collaboration.

The Seoul Design Foundation has also indicated that the city’s ambitions extend beyond hosting international events: it wants Seoul to become a platform through which Korean designers can connect with overseas galleries, collectors and markets.

The fair’s latest attendance and sales figures provide a concrete measure of that growing commercial interest.

With 12,000-plus visitors, more than 50 reported sales and continued post-fair purchasing and collaboration discussions, Design Miami Seoul’s second edition has placed collectible design more firmly within Seoul’s expanding international cultural marketplace.
