Toh Wei Soong Bags Third Bronze at Asian Para Games After Missing Silver by 0.03 Seconds — But His Gold Medal Hopes Aren’t Over

NAGOYA, JAPAN — Singapore para-swimming star Toh Wei Soong has captured his third bronze medal in three consecutive days at the 2026 Asian Para Games, extending his remarkable medal-winning career despite narrowly missing out on defending his men’s 50m butterfly S7 title.

The 28-year-old finished third in Wednesday’s final at the Nagoya City General Gymnasium, touching the wall in 31.53 seconds, just 0.03 seconds behind silver medalist Ruan Jingsong of China.

China’s Zhang Yilong claimed gold in 30.71 seconds, completing another impressive performance for the Chinese swimming team.

Although Toh fell short of retaining the title he won at the previous Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, his latest podium finish brought his career total to 10 Asian Para Games medals.

It also completed a hat-trick of bronze medals at the ongoing Aichi-Nagoya Games, following his third-place finishes in the 400m freestyle S7 on Monday and 100m freestyle S7 on Tuesday.

The result reinforces Toh’s position among Singapore’s most accomplished para-swimmers, with more opportunities still potentially ahead in the competition.

In a sprint race lasting barely half a minute, the difference between standing second and third on the podium was almost imperceptible.

Toh’s performance demonstrated how competitive the S7 butterfly event has become.

Zhang established a clear lead, while Ruan narrowly edged out the Singaporean for second place.

For Toh, it was a particularly significant race because he entered as defending champion, having won gold in the same discipline at Hangzhou in 2023.

This time, he was unable to retain the crown, but secured another place on the podium.

Three Days, Three Bronze Medals

Toh has been one of Singapore’s most consistent medal winners at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.

His results so far are:

DateEventTimeMedal
October 19Men’s 400m freestyle S75:24.23Bronze
October 20Men’s 100m freestyle S71:05.33Bronze
October 21Men’s 50m butterfly S731.53Bronze

His opening bronze came in the 400m freestyle S7, where Filipino swimming star Ernie Gawilan took gold in 4:56.72, ahead of China’s Zhang Yilong in 5:01.36.

The following day, Toh earned another bronze in the 100m freestyle S7, finishing behind Zhang and Uzbekistan’s Sardor Bakhtiyorov.

Wednesday’s butterfly bronze completed his three-day podium streak.

From Three Gold Medals in Hangzhou to a New Challenge in Nagoya

Toh arrived in Japan with an impressive Asian Para Games record.

At the previous edition in Hangzhou in 2023, he captured three gold medals and one silver.

His gold medals came in the men’s 50m freestyle S7, 50m butterfly S7 and 100m backstroke S7, while his silver came in the 400m freestyle S7.

Those victories included a Games-record performance in the 50m freestyle, completed in 28.81 seconds.

He had also won two gold medals and a bronze at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia.

With three additional bronzes this week, his career medal count now stands at 10.

A Two-Time Paralympian With a Strong International Record

Beyond the Asian Para Games, Toh has represented Singapore at two Paralympic Games.

He also earned silver in the men’s 50m freestyle S7 at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

His success is particularly notable given the physical challenges associated with transverse myelitis, an inflammatory spinal cord condition that affects the use of his legs.

The S7 swimming classification covers athletes with specified physical impairments affecting swimming performance. Athletes compete against others assessed under the relevant classification criteria.

Toh’s performances across freestyle, butterfly and backstroke underline his versatility at international level.

Singapore’s Medal Campaign Continues in Japan

Singapore’s other medals include performances in boccia, where competitors had already secured silver and bronze medals.

The national delegation is participating in para swimming, athletics, archery, badminton, boccia, cycling, judo, shooting and table tennis.

The Games run from October 18 to 24.

Can Toh Wei Soong Still Win Gold?

Although the butterfly title has slipped away, Toh’s competition is not necessarily over.

According to the pre-event schedule reported by The Straits Times, he was expected to compete in the men’s 100m backstroke S7 on October 22 and 50m freestyle S7 on October 23.

He won gold in both events at Hangzhou, giving him opportunities to defend those titles if he starts as scheduled.

His results also show that the competition will be difficult, particularly against China’s Zhang Yilong, who has already beaten him in multiple events this week.

At this stage, no result from either remaining event has been confirmed in the reports reviewed.

The bottom line: Toh Wei Soong has earned three bronze medals in three days, taking his Asian Para Games career tally to 10. He missed silver in the 50m butterfly by just 0.03 seconds, but his campaign in Japan could still offer further opportunities for podium finishes.
