Philippines Becomes Viber’s No. 1 Premium Revenue Market as Subscriptions Jump 75.5% — But Its Bigger Digital Business Opportunity Is Just Beginning

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has emerged as Rakuten Viber’s biggest revenue-generating market for its premium subscription service, signaling a major shift in how Filipinos use — and increasingly pay for — digital communication platforms.

According to figures presented by Rakuten Viber during an October 2026 media briefing, revenue from Viber Plus in the Philippines surged 75.5% year-to-date, while the number of paying subscribers increased 34.3% year-on-year.

The country now ranks first globally in active Viber Plus paying subscribers and contributes the largest share of the platform’s worldwide premium subscription revenue.

But the story extends far beyond Filipinos paying for additional messaging features.

Viber Dating, business messaging, artificial intelligence and possible tourism partnerships are emerging as additional growth engines, positioning the Philippines as one of the company’s most strategically important digital markets.

The bigger question: Can Viber transform its strong Philippine user base into a profitable ecosystem of subscriptions, digital commerce and AI-powered services — without sacrificing the privacy and trust that attracted users in the first place?

Philippines Becomes Viber’s Largest Premium Subscription Market

Rakuten Viber’s Philippine operations are recording significant growth in premium service adoption.

Viber senior director for Asia-Pacific David Tse said the performance demonstrates that Filipino customers increasingly recognize value in paid features beyond conventional messaging.

The Philippines now leads the company’s global markets in active paying subscribers for Viber Plus and in revenue contribution from the premium service.

According to the company:

  • Viber Plus revenue in the Philippines increased 75.5% year-to-date.
  • Paying subscribers grew 34.3% year-on-year.
  • Philippine users recorded particularly strong daily engagement.
  • Monthly active users are projected to grow 16.5% in 2026.

These results suggest that premium digital subscriptions are gaining traction among Filipino consumers.

However, the growth percentages do not reveal the total number of paying subscribers or the actual peso value of subscription revenue.

The company’s figures therefore establish strong relative growth, but they do not independently confirm a particular revenue milestone in pesos.

Why Filipinos Are Paying for Viber Plus

Viber Plus is the company’s premium subscription service, offering additional features that are not available in the standard free experience.

According to Viber’s official support documentation, these include ad-free messaging, an invisible mode, silent group exits, additional customization and advanced message management.

Philippine Star reporting identified a subscription price of approximately ₱99 per month during the October briefing.

The service gives subscribers access to features such as editing or deleting messages without leaving the usual notification in the conversation.

Invisible mode allows users to hide certain activity indicators while retaining access to other users’ information where their privacy settings permit it.

The service also includes custom app icons and additional support features.

For regular users, these capabilities offer more control over their messaging experience.

For Viber, they create recurring revenue from an application whose basic messaging and calling services remain free.

Actual subscription prices may vary by platform, promotion and billing arrangement, so users should confirm the price displayed inside the application before subscribing.

Viber Dating Emerges as Another Major Revenue Driver

While premium subscriptions are growing rapidly, Viber Dating is showing an even more dramatic rise in activity.

The company reported that revenue from its dating service increased 95.6% year-to-date.

Monthly active users of Viber Dating in the Philippines also increased 96.9% year-on-year.

Filipino users accounted for approximately 56% of all new Viber Dating profiles globally during the reported year-to-date period.

That makes the Philippines the company’s largest source of new dating profiles.

For comparison, Newsbytes.ph reported that the corresponding global monthly active user growth rate for Viber Dating was approximately 44%.

The Philippine market is therefore expanding much faster than the global average on that measure.

These results show that Viber is increasingly moving beyond its traditional position as a messaging application.

Dating allows the company to enter another category of digital consumer services while serving users already familiar with its communication platform.

However, new dating profiles should not be confused with paying customers, verified relationships or successful matches.

Those measures require separate evidence.

Filipino Users Are Spending More Time on Viber

The company’s Philippine growth is also being supported by higher engagement.

Rakuten Viber reported a 24% increase in average daily time spent using its platform.

The Philippines ranked first among the company’s 10 largest markets on the reported measure of engagement growth.

The company also projected a 16.5% increase in Philippine monthly active users during 2026.

More time spent inside an application may create opportunities to introduce premium subscriptions, business services and additional consumer features.

But engagement alone does not guarantee higher profitability.

A platform must also manage the costs of running its services, developing new products, protecting users and acquiring customers.

For Viber, converting activity into sustainable revenue will be an important business challenge.

Businesses Are Becoming a Bigger Part of Viber’s Philippine Growth

The company is also expanding its business messaging ecosystem.

Live business accounts in the Philippines increased 20.5% year-on-year, while meaningful business interactions rose 127.3%.

Filipino businesses now account for approximately 24% of Viber’s worldwide live business accounts, placing the Philippines second globally in this category.

These results suggest that more companies are using Viber as a channel for customer communication.

Businesses can use messaging platforms to respond to inquiries, provide service updates, communicate with customers and support commercial relationships.

For retailers, hotels, restaurants and service providers, this creates an additional channel for reaching customers without relying exclusively on websites or conventional telephone support.

However, the number of business accounts does not establish how much revenue those businesses generated through Viber.

The company has not published independently audited Philippine transaction or sales figures associated with the reported interaction growth.

Viber Explores Tourism Partnership With the Philippine Government

Another potential growth opportunity involves Philippine tourism.

Viber is pursuing a partnership with the Department of Tourism that could make accredited tourism operators more accessible through verified business accounts.

Under the proposed arrangement, travelers would be able to discover participating establishments and contact them directly through the messaging application.

Hotels, restaurants, tour operators and other tourism-related businesses could potentially benefit from greater visibility.

For travelers, the service could provide a more convenient way to make inquiries and obtain information from participating operators.

The idea also aligns with Viber’s broader ambition of connecting consumers and businesses within one platform.

However, the proposed tourism collaboration should not be described as a completed nationwide rollout.

The company was still pursuing the arrangement when the October announcement was made.

Its practical impact will depend on implementation, business participation and customer adoption.

AI Features Could Become Viber’s Next Competitive Advantage

Viber is also expanding the use of artificial intelligence in messaging.

The company has introduced or promoted AI-assisted functions involving suggested replies, conversation summaries, unread message recaps, translation and image-related tools.

These features are intended to reduce repetitive tasks and make communications more convenient.

For users managing numerous conversations, AI summaries and translation tools may provide practical assistance.

For businesses, AI could potentially support faster customer responses and more efficient management of inquiries.

But wider AI adoption also creates questions about privacy, accuracy and user control.

The company has emphasized that privacy safeguards are central to its approach.

According to its statements, AI requests are not retained after processing, and user information from those requests is not used to train AI models.

Viber also says users have controls for disabling supported AI functionality.

These are company-described safeguards, not proof that every possible privacy or security risk has been eliminated.

Users should also distinguish between protections applicable to Viber’s private messaging and the separate data handling involved when choosing to use optional AI services.

Privacy and Scam Prevention Could Determine Viber’s Future

As Viber adds subscriptions, dating, business messaging and AI, maintaining customer trust becomes increasingly important.

Online communication platforms must address spam, impersonation, fraudulent messages and other forms of digital abuse.

Rakuten Viber has discussed initiatives involving the National Telecommunications Commission and telecommunications companies to combat unwanted messages.

Separately, the Department of Information and Communications Technology met with Rakuten executives in July 2026 to discuss Viber service performance in the Philippines.

Officials examined concerns about service reliability and the possibility of bringing portions of Viber’s services closer to Philippine users.

These developments demonstrate that the platform’s expansion depends not only on consumer demand but also on infrastructure and user protection.

For businesses and individual subscribers, a trustworthy service is important because messaging applications often carry personal information, work-related conversations and customer communications.

Why the Philippine Market Matters to Rakuten’s Global Strategy

The Philippines has become more than a large audience for Viber.

It is now the company’s leading source of premium subscription revenue, a major contributor to dating adoption and one of its biggest business messaging markets.

That combination creates several opportunities for Rakuten.

Subscription revenue provides recurring income.

Dating services can create additional commercial opportunities.

Business accounts may help the company deepen relationships with merchants and other enterprises.

Meanwhile, AI features could encourage users to spend more time inside the platform.

Together, these developments suggest an effort to expand Viber from a conventional messaging application into a broader digital services ecosystem.

Rakuten’s investor materials for the second quarter of 2026 also identified the Philippines among the markets contributing to Viber’s business growth.

However, those materials did not disclose Philippine Viber Plus revenue as a separate financial reporting line.

The precise contribution of Philippine premium subscriptions to Rakuten’s consolidated earnings therefore remains undisclosed.

Can Filipinos Continue Supporting Premium Digital Subscriptions?

The strong growth of Viber Plus challenges the assumption that Filipino consumers are unwilling to pay for messaging services.

Users are demonstrating an interest in additional convenience, privacy features and customization.

But the market remains competitive.

Consumers can choose among free communication platforms, and many services offer overlapping features.

Viber must therefore continue demonstrating why its paid options provide enough value to justify ongoing subscription costs.

Subscription growth may also become more difficult as the platform expands beyond its most enthusiastic paying users.

Maintaining retention, improving service quality and offering useful features will matter as much as attracting new customers.

The company also needs to avoid introducing unnecessary complexity that could weaken the simplicity of its original messaging experience.

The Bigger Story: From Messaging App to Digital Ecosystem

Viber’s latest Philippine results show that the company is successfully generating greater commercial value from its established user base.

The country ranks first worldwide in premium subscription revenue contribution.

Its dating service is expanding rapidly.

Business interactions are rising, while possible tourism partnerships could introduce new commercial use cases.

Yet the platform’s future will depend on how well it manages growth across these increasingly different services.

A company that began by connecting people through messages and calls is now seeking to become a larger part of how consumers interact with businesses, discover services and manage everyday communications.

The Philippines has become Viber’s most important premium subscription revenue market. But the bigger test is whether Rakuten can convert growing Filipino engagement into sustainable long-term earnings while preserving user privacy, maintaining trust and competing with other digital platforms.
