Jeffren Lumbo Returns to His Happy Place to Defend His Crown — But Can He End His Painful Run of Near-Misses?

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Jeffren Lumbo is returning to familiar territory with a championship to defend and unfinished business to settle.

The Sarangani-born golfer will headline the title defense at the ₱2.5-million ICTSI South Pacific Classic, scheduled for October 20–23, 2026, at the South Pacific Golf and Leisure Estates in Davao City. The venue holds special significance for Lumbo, who captured his maiden professional victory there last year after surviving a dramatic five-hole playoff against Russell Bautista.

Now, after a frustrating stretch of near-victories on the Philippine Golf Tour (PGT), Lumbo hopes his return to the course he considers his happy place will help him rediscover the form that delivered his breakthrough title. From breakthrough champion to a string of heartbreaking finishes

Lumbo’s recent campaign has been marked by narrow defeats that have repeatedly brought him close to another trophy.

He finished runner-up to Art Arbole in Negros Occidental before suffering another painful loss to Jhonnel Ababa at the ICTSI Iloilo Golf Challenge. In Iloilo, Lumbo appeared poised to win after building a three-shot advantage entering the final round, only for Ababa to rally with clutch birdies on the closing holes and take the title by one stroke. Those results demonstrated Lumbo’s ability to contend against the country’s leading professionals, but they also highlighted how small mistakes can determine the outcome of a tournament.

His challenge now is to turn those lessons into a stronger finish at South Pacific, where he has already proved he can perform under pressure.

A difficult latest outing, but signs of promise remain

Lumbo’s latest tournament at the ICTSI Pueblo de Oro Championship in Cagayan de Oro offered a mixed picture.

According to the latest reports, he finished eight shots behind champion Rupert Zaragosa after a triple bogey during the final round hurt his chances. Nevertheless, Lumbo recorded 16 birdies during the event, evidence that his scoring ability remains a threat when his game comes together.

That combination of potential and inconsistency makes his upcoming title defense particularly intriguing. A return to a familiar course could provide an opportunity to regain confidence, although he will still need to manage mistakes and maintain consistency across four rounds.

Defending the crown will not be easy

Lumbo will face a competitive field featuring golfers eager to claim the ₱2.5-million championship.

Zaragosa enters the event after winning at Pueblo de Oro and will be looking to carry that momentum into Davao. Other players expected to provide a serious challenge include Keanu Jahns and Zanieboy Gialon, who also contended at Pueblo de Oro.

The tournament’s four-day format will demand precision, patience and composure. With recent Philippine Golf Tour events producing tight finishes, even a small mistake could separate the eventual champion from the rest of the field.

For Lumbo, the stakes go beyond simply retaining his title. Another victory would strengthen the case that his breakthrough last year was the beginning of a sustained run among the country’s top professional golfers.

Can Lumbo turn home-course confidence into another championship?

Last year’s five-hole playoff victory at South Pacific gave Lumbo his first professional crown and established a special connection with the Davao course.

This time, he returns with greater expectations and the pressure that comes with being the defending champion. His recent near-misses show that he can compete, but the next challenge is converting that contention into a victory.

With Zaragosa carrying winning momentum and other contenders eager to seize the spotlight, Lumbo’s title defense promises another compelling test on the Philippine Golf Tour.

Will Davao once again become the place where Lumbo makes history, or will a determined challenger end his reign? The answer will unfold when the ICTSI South Pacific Classic tees off on October 20.
