Marina Square Café Known for Serving Elderly Customers Faces Closure Amid Mall Redevelopment

A café at Marina Square that has built a following among elderly customers is facing an uncertain future as the shopping mall prepares to close for a major redevelopment.

Marina Square is scheduled to shut on March 31, 2027, with the site set to undergo a major transformation that will include new residences, offices, hospitality facilities, public spaces and an expanded mix of retail and lifestyle offerings.

The redevelopment will also see the existing four-storey mall extensively revamped, with more than 76,000 square metres of gross floor area set to receive upgrades.

For small food and beverage businesses operating within the mall, the planned closure presents challenges as they consider whether to relocate, suspend operations or find new premises.

The café has attracted attention for its role as a welcoming place for older customers, adding to the sense of community that some regulars associate with the mall.

Marina Square has been a familiar destination for generations of Singapore shoppers since the Marina Centre area was completed in 1986. The mall currently houses more than 200 shops covering food and beverage, fashion, lifestyle and family-oriented concepts.

Its redevelopment is expected to introduce a wider selection of dining, sports, wellness and lifestyle offerings, together with landscaped areas and spaces designed for community activities.

The revamped development will also feature a new public park above Stamford Canal, along with additional public spaces, pedestrian connections and an elevated botanical loop linking the precinct with nearby attractions and developments.

While the redevelopment is intended to reshape Marina Square for changing consumer needs, existing tenants face the immediate task of planning for the transition.

For customers who have made the café part of their routines, particularly older patrons, the closure of the current mall could mark the end of a familiar meeting place.

The redevelopment is expected to be completed in 2031, when Marina Square will return as part of a larger mixed-use precinct combining retail, dining, hospitality, residential, office and community spaces.
