A 44-year-old man has been charged with vandalism after allegedly throwing a rock at the glass entrance of Singapore’s Police Cantonment Complex, causing the door to shatter.
Saravanan Arulanandan Pillay was charged in court on Sept 17, two days after the incident at the police complex.
Police said they were alerted at about 10.55pm on Sept 15 after the man allegedly threw a rock weighing almost half a kilogram at the main entrance.
Preliminary investigations found that he allegedly threw the same rock twice, causing the glass door to shatter. Police arrested him at the scene and seized the rock as evidence.
Authorities said the man was believed to have been intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Saravanan appeared in court via video link and was ordered to be remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for a medical assessment. His request for bail was deferred, with the case scheduled to be heard again on Oct 1.
The vandalism charge is brought under Section 3 of Singapore’s Vandalism Act 1966.
If convicted, the offence carries a fine of up to S$2,000 or imprisonment of up to three years. The law also provides for between three and eight strokes of the cane.
The incident caused damage to the main entrance of the Police Cantonment Complex, although police said the man was arrested immediately following the alleged act.
The Singapore Police Force said it has zero tolerance for vandalism and will take action against those who deliberately damage property.
The case will now proceed through the courts, where the allegations against the accused will be considered under Singapore’s legal process.
