Donald Trump Jr.’s wife, Bettina Anderson, has defended a Russian oligarch’s role in their lavish Bahamas wedding celebrations, saying the businessman paid for two nights of festivities but was not involved in the couple’s actual wedding ceremony.
The clarification came after an investigation reported that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, a figure with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, financed hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses connected to the couple’s wedding celebrations.
Anderson said the financial support was a personal wedding gift from a friend and rejected suggestions that the arrangement had political implications.
Oligarch paid for Bahamas celebrations
Kremlev, who heads the International Boxing Association, reportedly covered major expenses for the celebrations, including the rental of a private island and an elaborate fireworks display.
The celebrations took place in the Bahamas in May, after Trump Jr. and Anderson had privately married.
According to the couple, the Bahamas gathering was initially planned as a separate celebration with friends and family.
Anderson said Kremlev generously hosted two nights of festivities as a wedding gift.
The scale of the spending, however, has drawn attention because of Kremlev’s connections to the Russian political establishment and Trump Jr.’s position as the eldest son of US President Donald Trump.
Bettina Anderson draws a distinction
Anderson sought to draw a clear line between the private wedding ceremony and the subsequent celebrations.
She said the actual wedding was a private family event and that Kremlev did not pay for or participate in the ceremony itself.
The larger Bahamas celebrations were organised separately and later became part of the couple’s wedding festivities.
Trump Jr. and Anderson have defended Kremlev as a personal friend rather than a political associate or business partner.
They also criticised what they described as efforts to turn a personal celebration into a political controversy.

That distinction, however, is unlikely to end questions about the scale of the gift or the implications of a foreign businessman with Kremlin connections providing such substantial financial support to the president’s family.
