A simple game of tagu-taguan took a frightening turn in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, after a 9-year-old boy was impaled in the arm by a metal gate while playing near a chapel.
According to GMA Regional TV, the boy was playing tagu-taguan when he climbed onto the gate of a chapel in Tagoloan. Residents had reportedly warned him not to climb the structure, but the child continued playing until his arm was pierced by the metal.
The incident left the metal still lodged in the boy’s arm as rescuers prepared to bring him to a hospital. The dramatic rescue drew attention because the metal could not simply be removed on the spot without risking further injury.
A separate report from The Mindanao Sentinel, published August 26, identified the child as Amrel and placed the incident in Zone 6, Barangay Santa Cruz, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental. The report said personnel from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) responded and transported the boy by ambulance to Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) in Cagayan de Oro City.
The local report also said the sharp portion of the gate remained attached to the child during transport, allowing rescuers to avoid unnecessarily moving the embedded metal before he could receive medical attention.
As of GMA’s latest report, the boy was already safe and recovering at a hospital in Cagayan de Oro City. His parents had not yet issued a public statement.
The incident serves as another reminder of the dangers that can be hidden in ordinary structures around places where children play. Sharp, exposed metal, gates and fences can become serious hazards when children climb or play around them.
Parents and guardians are being reminded to keep children away from potentially dangerous structures, particularly gates and fences with exposed or pointed metal parts.
For now, the most important news is that the young boy survived the frightening accident and is receiving medical care.
