Singapore Temperature Drops Below 21 Degrees as Heavy Rain Brings Rare Cool Spell

Singapore experienced an unusually cool spell on Sept. 27 as heavy thundery showers swept across the island, sending temperatures below 21 degrees Celsius in the vicinity of Clementi Road.

The temperature fell to 20.7 degrees Celsius at 12.20pm in the Clementi area, according to Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) data. The reading came as moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds affected many parts of the island.

Other areas also experienced noticeably cooler conditions. Scotts Road recorded 22.3 degrees Celsius while Kim Chuan Road reached 22.4 degrees Celsius, with temperatures across Singapore remaining below 24 degrees Celsius during the afternoon.

The cooler weather followed a heavy rain warning issued by MSS earlier that morning. The agency said the thundery showers were expected to continue into the early afternoon.

Singapore’s typically warm and humid climate makes temperatures below 21 degrees Celsius relatively uncommon. The country’s official lowest temperature on record remains 19.4 degrees Celsius, recorded on Jan. 30 and 31, 1934.

The latest temperature drop was linked to the widespread rainfall and associated weather conditions rather than a prolonged cold spell. MSS had forecast localised short-duration thundery showers over most parts of the island during the late morning and afternoon on many days in the period.

The rain also brought a temporary improvement in particulate pollution. One-hour PM2.5 readings were in the normal band across all five regions at 1pm, although the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index ranged from 91 to 131, with central, eastern and western Singapore recording readings in the unhealthy range.

Singapore has experienced several unusually cool periods in 2026. On June 12, the temperature at Newton fell to 20.1 degrees Celsius, the lowest islandwide reading recorded during the year at that point, after heavy rain swept across the country.

Such sharp temperature changes can occur during periods of prolonged or intense rainfall, when cloud cover, reduced solar heating and rain-cooled air temporarily lower temperatures.

For residents accustomed to Singapore’s tropical heat, the Clementi reading provided a brief taste of unusually cool weather — but the conditions were driven by heavy tropical rainfall rather than the arrival of a conventional cold season.

As Singapore continues to experience increasingly variable weather patterns, episodes of intense rain followed by sudden temperature drops are likely to remain closely watched by residents and weather authorities.
